Ljubljana is the capital and the largest city of Slovenia located along the Ljubljanica River in central Slovenia in a natural depression surrounded by high peaks of the Julian Alps.

The history of the city dates back to ancient times, with prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements and the Roman city of Emona, before becoming a significant center under Habsburg rule and the capital of the Illyrian Provinces during the Napoleonic era. It was known for its culture and education, rebuilt in Baroque and Vienna Secession styles after earthquakes in 1511 and 1895, and eventually became the capital of Slovenia upon its independence in 1991.

Ljubljana has been included on the UNESCO’s WHS list in 2021.

FRANCE ~ Roman Theatre - Orange - UNESCO ~

... Great view of the world's best preserved ancient Roman theatre in a village with over 2,000 years of history... even today, its monumental impressive stage wall, over 30 metres high and 103 m long is  perfectly intact with arches and blend arcades... but there are only sparse remains of the original decoration: a few pillars and the imperial statue of Augustus (3,55 m high) in the central niche... due to the acoustics and the structure, 7,000-9,000 spectators could attend performances... there are still concert, opera and ballet events till today... the view from the top on modern day Orange is outstanding... this exceptional site is a must-see for lovers of archeology, combining history, remarkable acoustics and emotion... Thanks a lot Madeleine! (✿◠‿◠)

Located in the South of France in the Vaucluse region in the heart of the Provence. The Roman theatre of Orange was built around 100 CE and used for plays and performances and served a public function in Roman Orange city. Around 391 CE the Roman theatre was closed down and in the centuries to come, the building was neglected. Mainly used as a stone quarry or refugee place, the Orange city theatre crumbled down. It was only in 1824 that reconstruction started and since 1869 the old Roman theatre of Orange is the backdrop for numerous plays and concerts.

In 1981, Unesco added the Orange City Theatre to the list of World Heritage Sites in Orange.

SCOTLAND ~ Eilean Donan Castle - Dornie - Wester Ross ~

... Stunning view of stormy clouds over the illuminated Eilean Donan castle... surrounded by the moody atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands... its picturesque setting is situated on a small tidal island where three sea lochs meet, just of the shore... one of Scotland's most iconic and most recognisable castles... featured in many movies including most famously, the original "Highlander" as well in the "The World is Not Enough"... visitors have the opportunity to cross the famous arched stone footbridge and enjoy exploring much of this well preserved or rather restored castle with gorgeous views from different vantage points...Thanks a lot Madeleine! \_(♥‿♥)_/

Photo:© Marie Kerr

The original medieval castle was first built in the early 13th century as a sea fortress against the Vikings, who were still wreaking havoc in the north of Scotland. Later it was the seat of the Lord of the Isles, whose kingdom stretched across the islands, with the sea as its main thoroughfare.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle was involved in the Jacobite Wars and was badly damaged in the process. It stood as a ruin on its small island for 200 years until it was bought by a Scottish officer in 1911, who gradually rebuilt it over the next 20 years. In 1955, the Castle was opened to the public by the grandson of Colonel John.

SWITZERLAND ~ Bern - UNESCO ~

... Beautiful winter view of the snow-covered roofs of Bern's Old Town with clock tower... it stands out for its beautifully preserved medieval cityscape, a living testament to its rich history and cultural heritage... most of the earthy-green buildings lining the narrow streets and laneways are over 800 years old neatly nestled in the loop of the crystal-clear turquoise Aare River... the old section of Bern has many buildings that date from the 1100s to the 1700s... an important site is the remains of the old city gate... on the top of the gate’s tower is a clock that was installed there in 1530... moving figures come out of the clock as it chimes each hour... Bern is one of Switzerland's most beautiful cities...Thanks a lot Madeleine!(✿◠‿◠)

Photo: Marie-Therese Lauper

Bern began in 1191 as a military post. It grew into a city and then into an independent state. It became part of Switzerland in 1353 and was chosen as the capital city in 1848. During the 20th century, Bern developed into a modern service centre, accommodating the headquarters of international organisations and companies.

Bern’s name comes from the German word for “bear.” Bears are a symbol of the city. They have been kept on display in Bern for hundreds of years.

In 1983 UNESCO named Bern a World Heritage site.
