FAROE ISLANDS

... Interesting postcard with the facts and figures of some of the wildest islands in Europe...  and most fascinating and remote... I'm not really a big fan or collector of all these *special* series postcards... but you don't often get the chance to swap for a W&S from there... and not at all with such a great selection of beautiful stamps (I like the back more than its front😉)... found a nice story about how there postal system works... The self-governing nation has a well-developed communication network - courtesy of the Kingdom of Denmark of which it is part - but many still rely on the postal service.

Some of the islands are connected by tunnels and bridges, but on others, mail bags arrive by boat or even helicopter.

 A network of hard-working postal workers then criss-cross islands on old mountain routes used since the 19thC delivering the post.

The fittest people used to be nominated to walk these routes, but these days 4x4 postal vehicles cross the rugged terrain.

The Faroe Islands are an archipelago of 18 islands of which 16 are inhabited in the North Atlantic Ocean, situated roughly midway between Iceland, Norway and the northern tip of Scotland.

They are an autonomous country, self-governing but within the Kingdom of Denmark. Tórshavn is the capital of the Faroe Islands.Fishing is the most important Faroese industry.

Leirvík is a town located on the east coast of the second-largest island Eysturoy. Archaeological excavations have shown that the town was first settled the 9th century by the Vikings.

Puffins, razorbills, cormorants, Black guillemot and the large gannet are often found in this part of the world. The Faroese hare, sheep, horse and small Faroese mice are unique after having adapted to the climate over a long period of time. The ground is covered by more than 400 types of low-lying Arctic-type plants.

The highest hill in the country, Slættaratindur (882m) on the island of Eysturoy.
Island group (17 out of 22 inhabited) in the North Atlantic, between the Shetland Islands and Iceland, forming an outlying part of Denmark. The islands are high and rugged and have only sparse vegetation. The capital is Thorshavn on Strømø. The main industries are fishing, fish processing, shipbuilding, and crafted goods. Spoken languages: Faeroese and Danish.

They did not join the European Union with Denmark in 1972 because it would have opened their fishing waters to other EU members.
