JERSEY ~ Liberation Sculpture - St Helier Town ~

... Great historical monument on Liberation Square... a constant reminder of the end of WWII and a moving piece of art... the Liberation Sculpture was certainly the most important, and probably the most controversial work of public art put up in Jersey in the 20thC... the design changed radically in response to fierce public criticism, and as usual questions of cost played their part in the public debate.

When the design was first revealed public opinion was generally one of astonishment that a line of figures were shown releasing a number of doves of peace. The Committee explained that they had decided to change the brief to commemorate 50 years of peace, but islanders had been anticipating a sculpture to represent 50 years since the Liberation and many remarked that if any doves had been around at the end of the Occupation, they would probably have been caught and eaten by the hungry population, rather than released.

Many commented that there was no recognition of the military aspect of the Occupation and a subtle serviceman in battledress and boots was added to the group. The original design did not allow interaction, but the revised version allowed members of the public to walk through and join the figures. The artist, Philip Jackson, revealed that his original idea had been to have the figures waving a flag - much more in tune with the public's understanding of the experience of Liberation - but the Committee had decided to change the brief to one of "peace", and so a dove motif had been introduced. Much to the relief of all concerned the revised design incorporated a giant Union Flag. (theislandwiki)
Thanks so much once more dear Andrene!! ✿◕ ‿ ◕✿ (a lot to read but I found it very interesting to know)
Liberation Square was developed in 1995 to mark the 50th Anniversary of the liberation of the Island in 1945 (after about 5 years of German occupation in WWII).

At the centre of Liberation Square is Philip Jackson’s bronze sculpture depicting  "a group of Islanders in two distinct groups holding the Union Flag, with a single figure – the liberator – subtly dressed in army fatigues at the centre of a fountain. Twelve water jets in the pool symbolize Jersey's 12 parishes. The square was opened by Prince Charles on the 9th May 1995.

JERSEY ~ Mont Orgueil Castle - Gorey ~

... Not often you get postcards of one of the Channel Islands (this will be nr3 and 4 from Jersey after collecting for 10 years)... but I was so lucky to find two great surprises in my mailbox... this one shows one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Britain and one of the most photographed sites on the Island... unique combination of history, mystery and sheer grandeur... from this impressive castle you have breathtaking views across the channel, as you delve into the network of staircases, towers and secret rooms to discover hidden treasures... the castle also hosts many “living history” days and events, with actors bringing the past to life... Thanks so much Andrene!!(✿◠‿◠) it must have been worth climbing *197*😅 steps!!

Mont Orgueil Castle is located on the eastern end of Jersey and was built in the 13thC, originally to defend Jersey from the French. Over the years it’s been added to and altered, mainly in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

One use for the castle was as a prison, a role which it continued to play until the 17thC. Having acted as an observation post in the First World War, during World War II, Mont Orgueil took on yet another guise as a German military base, at the time when the Channel Islands were captured by the Germans.

The Castle is home to several exhibitions, including “The Queen” by light artist Chris Levine and holographer Rob Munday, which features, “Equanimity”, a world-renowned holographic portrait of Her Majesty commissioned as part of Jersey’s celebrations of its 800-year-old relationship with the monarchy.

THE ISLAND OF JERSEY ~ Corbiere Lighthouse - St. Brelade ~

...Beautiful view of one of the most photographed buildings on the island...it is set on a rugged point in a fantastic scenic location...Thanks a lot Liane!!❁◕ ‿ ◕❁

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands between France and England off the coast of Normandy  a Crown dependency of the United Kingdom. It is not part of the United Kingdom, and has an international identity separate from that of the UK, but the United Kingdom is constitutionally responsible for the defence of Jersey.

Corbiere Lighthouse (meaning 'gathering place of the crows) (Jèrriais: La Corbiéthe) is the extreme south-western point of Jersey in St. Brelade It was the first lighthouse in the British Isles to be made of concrete rather than the traditional stone. It stands 135ft above sea level and the light can be seen up to 18 miles away. This 10-metres high lighthouse, designed by Sir John Coode, was completed in November 1873 on rocks 90 feet above high water and was switched on the following April.

...This must be one of my lucky weeks!^__^
After a new place on thuesday I received another new island for my collection today! An amazing sunset in Jersey... The colors of the sky and water are soooo beautiful.

Unfortunately there was no cancellation on the stamp.

Elizabeth Castle provides a striking profile behind the harbours. The castle was built at the end of the 16th century. Noirmont Point is the most southerly headland in Jersey .
