UKRAINE ~ Odessa Opera and Ballet Theater - UNESCO ~

View of a great architectural monument from Ukraine and one of the most beautiful theaters in the world...Many thanks Alex!!

The Odessa National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet is the oldest theatre in Odessa.

The first opera house was opened in 1810 and destroyed by fire in 1873. The modern building was constructed  in neo-baroque (Vienna Baroque) style and opened in 1887. The architecture of the luxurious audience hall follows the late French rococo style. The unique acoustics of the horseshoe-designed hall allows to deliver even a whisper-low tone of voice from the stage to any part of the hall. The most recent renovation of the theater was completed in 2007.

The Ukrainian city of Odessa has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List and inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2023.

...received a beautiful gateway that leads into the old city ...a major landmark of Kiev and an important historical monument...Thanks a lot Alex!!

With great stamp:
Astronauts and Cosmonauts
(Issued 16-04-2011)

It was during the middle of the eleventh century that this gateway - which is one of three - was constructed by the Prince of Kiev, “Yaroslav the Wise”. The Gate of Kiev or Zoloti Vorata (which literally translates to "golden gate").

The gate was hardly ruined in 1240 when Tatar-Mongol hordes plundered Kiev and reconstructed in 1982 when the 1500 anniversary of the city was celebrated.

It is the only survivor of three main gateways built into the ancient city fortress and today houses a museum showing the history of the Gate and ancient Kiev.

Thanks Zhenia!!

Nice stamps too.

The monument to St. Andrew, the Apostle, along St. Vladimir cathedral at the site of Chersonesos Taurica, an ancient city near Sevastopol, current archaeological site in the Crimea.  Built in the spirit of the Byzantine architecture, it is distinguished for its exceptional harmony of sizes, proportionality of the scale and steadiness of the masses. During the World War II the building was bombed and almost distracted. At present it is reconstructed and renewed.

The Ukrainian government has included the site on its tentative World Heritage List. The site, however, is in danger of further urban invasion and coastal erosion.

UKRAINE ~Crimea-Mount Ai-Petri~

Got a stunning card showing an awesome white mountain in the sun against a clear blue sky... and this picture was taken by the sender itself...Thanks a lot Olga!!

With great stamps too!!
Although not Crimea's highest mountain (1,234m), Ai Petri (Saint Peter) is undoubtedly one of the great icons of the peninsula. For many kilometres along Crimea's south coast, its huge rock towers dominate the scene, rising abruptly from the magnificent lower slopes of natural pine forest. It's certainly one of the most spectacular, with its sparkling white limestone peak and its jagged `teeth'.
The peak is actually the weathered remains of a huge coral reef formed millions of years ago, when this area was under the sea, and although the limestone here is exceptionally dense - hence its longevity - fossils have been found in the rocks.
