"Race horses to starting"

Competitors prepare to race in one the Naadam festival's traditional horse races in Gobi Desert Mongolia. Horse racing is an important part of Naadam, Mongolian traditional games that also include wrestling, archery and ankle bone shooting.

Gobi means "Waterless Place",  it's the fifth largest desert in the world, covering more than 500,000 square miles of Mongolia and China. It is a cold desert - Populated mostly by Mongols and Han Chinese and located on a Plateau around 3,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level.

The Gobi Desert is perhaps one of the most severe regions on the planet, but people, plants, and animals have lived there for more than 2,000 years. Life can survive and beauty can be found even in the harshest places on Earth.

Located on a plateau that stretches across South East Mongolia and Northern China, the Gobi Desert is the fifth largest desert in the world and the second largest desert in Asia, covering an area of approximately 500,000 square miles. Unlike the Sahara there are few sand dunes in the Gobi; rather you'll find large barren expenses of gravel plains and rocky outcrops. Its location on a plateau high above sea level causes some extreme weather conditions. Winds can reach up to 85 miles per hour, causing temperatures ranging from -40° in winter to +40 in summer.

The Mongolian government established the Great Gobi National Park in 1975 and the UNESCO designated as the Great Gobi as the fourth largest Biosphere Reserve in the world in 1991 Great Gobi National Park is one of the largest World Biospheres, with an area larger than Switzerland.

The Gobi is most known in history as part of the great Mongol Empire, and as the location of several important cities along the Silk Road.

Bactrian camels (two-humped) are a domesticated animal important for their wool and their use by herders as a means of transportation across the desert. This amazing animal can travel for 30 days without drinking any water.
