RUSSIA ~ Novodevichy Convent - Moskou - UNESCO ~
... Great postcard with lots of interesting facts on... this monastery is one of the most beautiful architectural monuments in the country... probably the best-known of Moskou... a true masterpiece... still working as a nunnery to this day, this convent is about as deeply immersed in Orthodox history as one can get... a magnificent and peaceful place with an impressive icon collection... with picturesque and tranquil ponds and garden... and a fascinating nearby cemetery too...Thanks a lot Elena!【ツ】

During the Soviet epoch, it was turned into the most high-profile cemetery in the Soviet Union, with the likes of Peter Kropotkin, Nikita Khrushchev, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich, Konstantin Stanislavski, Boris Yeltsin, and Mstislav Rostropovich being interred there.
Unlike other Moscow cloisters, it has remained virtually intact since the 17thC. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wrangel Island is a Russian island in the Arctic Circle. This amazing snow-covered island is a haven for fabulous arctic wildlife, it is famous as the breeding ground of polar bears (along with Herald Island), seals, walruses, lemmings and a summer breeding ground for birds and whales. Arctic fox also make their home on the island. The islands are two of the closest to the North Pole.
Wrangel Island may have been the last place on earth where mammoths survived. It was discovered 162 years ago.
There are no humans on this island, only a few people work at the nature reserve and the staff at the arctic meteorological station who study the island’s fragile ecosystems, it is recognised as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2004 for its unspoilt natural environment.
The Wrangel Island Reserve did not even freeze during the Ice Age, when temperatures across the planet dropped for a long period. As a result, very rare ecosystems have evolved here in distinctive ways, and they are regarded as valuable.

The Amber Room in the Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo near Saint Petersburg is a complete chamber decoration of amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors.
It was a gift to Peter the Great in 1716 celebrating peace between Russia and Prussia. The Room was shipped to Russia in 18 large boxes and installed in the Winter House in St. Petersburg as a part of a European art collection. In 1755, Czarina Elizabeth ordered the room to be moved to the Catherine Palace in Pushkin. Italian designer Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli redesigned the room to fit into its new, larger space using additional amber shipped from Berlin.
The room's fate became anything but peaceful: Nazis looted it during World War II, and in the final months of the war, the amber panels, which had been packed away in crates, disappeared. A replica was completed in 2003, but the contents of the original, dubbed "the Eighth Wonder of the World," have remained missing for decades.

With great bunch of stamps: The 6 Kremlin stamps are defenitives issued in 2009 and "Weapon of the Victory stamp - Automotive vehicles" (issued 16-03-2012) Located in southern Siberia and on the northern edge of Mongolia Tuva extends from the coniferous forests of the Taiga in the north to the rolling Steppes in the south. Nowhere else in the world is so far from the sea.
The Sayan Mountains' towering peaks and cool lakes give rise to the tributaries that merge to become one of Siberia's major rivers, the Yenisei River, which flows north over 2000 miles to the Arctic Ocean. This is a protected and isolated area, having been kept closed by the Soviet Union since 1944.
Thanks Asya!!

RUSSIA ~Lake Baikal-UNESCO~
Great views of the largest natural tank of fresh water in the world... It contains 1/5 of the world's fresh water...that sounds unbelievably...it must be huge...(RU-1264275)Thanks Larisa!!
With nice stamps: Fountains of Russia (Issued 15-12- 2009)and Definitive stamps (Fox) of Russia (Issued 29-08-2008) Lake Baikal in eastern Siberia is the deepest lake in the world with a maximum depth of 1,632m, 640km long and judging by it size only it would be more of a sea than a lake. There are 26 islands on the lake, the largest being Olkhon Island. Baikal is also the world's most ancient freshwater lake, it originated 20-25 million years ago. In the winter, the place completely freezes over, which means there are no lake ferries. Instead, you can drive across the ice!
Lake Baikal was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996.

Yekaterina, the 4th largest city of Russia is located on the border of Europe and Asia,in the Ural mountains. It is the main industrial and cultural center of the Ural region.
The city was founded in 1723 by Vasily Tatischev and named after Saint Catherine, Tsar Peter the Great's wife Empress Catherine I (Yekaterina).
The city has quite a bloody history. It was, of course, the place where Tsar Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, four daughters Olga, Tatyana, Maria, Anastasia and young son Alexey, were brutally murdered by the Bolsheviks in July 1918.
