... Great views of the world's largest surviving waterwheel... a brilliant example of Victorian engineering... the most visible remains of a once extensive mining industry... one of the Island’s most iconic tourist attractions for over 150 years... a climb to the top is rewarded with beautiful panoramic views across the Laxey Valley... Thanks James!!ヽ(ヅ)ノ
The Laxey Wheel (also known as Lady Isabella) is a large waterwheel built in the village of Laxey on the Isle of Man. Designed by Robert Casement, it has a 72-foot-6-inch (22.1 m) diameter, is 6 feet (1.83 m) wide and revolves at approximately three revolutions per minute.
It was built in 1854 to pump water from the Glen Mooar part of the ‘Great Laxey Mines’ industrial complex and it served the mine for 70 years. The wheel was named "Lady Isabella" after the wife of Lieutenant Governor Charles Hope who was the island's governor at that time.
It is currently maintained by Manx National Heritage as part of the Great Laxey Wheel & Mines Trail.

ISLE OF MAN ~ Castletown ~
... Pretty view of Castle Rushes from the harbour... Castle Rushen gives Castletown its name (Manx - Ballacashtel)... situated at the centre of Mann's historic capital... a well-preserved medieval fortress and one of the finest in the British Isles... originally built for a Viking king... it was once the main place of government for the Island and also a prison... Thanks a lot James!! (✿ ♥‿♥)
Castletown is a town lying at the south of the island, it was the Manx capital until 1869. Tracing its origins back to 1090, Castletown holds true as one of the oldest towns in the British Isles. Its narrow streets and small fishing cottages prove this ancient past at every corner.
Fishing boats continue to fill the harbour, though Castletown saw the end of major commercial traffic to its port in the 1970's. The on going expansion of financial and industrial businesses in the area keep Castletown on the map as an important island town.
The Isle of Man is a self-governing Crown dependency in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland. The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, who holds the title of Lord of Mann.

ISLE OF MAN ~ Manxisms ~
...Kys t'ou to everyone ʘ͜͡ʘ...a really nice and "funny" postcard showing the islands dialect...it's sad that most of these dialects will become extinct, they are part of a nations identity... Gura mie ayd James!! ㋡
Manx English is the historic dialect of English spoken on the Isle of Man, though today in decline. It has many borrowings from the original Manx language, a Goidelic language.
The language was historically the dominant one on the island, but fell out of use during the twentieth century.
At the present time, less than one hundred children receive their education exclusively in Manx. There are an additional 1,689 second-language speakers, comprising 2.2% of the population of the Isle of Man.
The language has been offered in public schools since 1992, and has been mandatory since 2001.

ISLE OF MAN ~ Ramsey ~
Lovely views of a coastal town on the Isle of Man...a tiny island in the Irish Sea...Thanks a lot James!!
"Ramsey harbour - Mooragh Park - Parliament Street"
Ramsey is the second largest town on the island after Douglas and has one of the biggest harbours. It was formerly one of the main points of communication with Scotland.
Ramsey has also been a route for several invasions by Vikings and Scots. The town is also known as 'Royal Ramsey' due to royal visits from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1847 followed by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1907.
The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency, which means that it is technically a possession of the crown directly, not of the UK an it is also not a territory of the UK or of the European Union.

ISLE OF MAN ~ Peel ~
...A popular seaside destination on the island and beautiful historic town... with the best beaches and stunning "sunsets"...Thanks a lot James for one more lovely postcard of your island シ!!
Peel sits on the west coast of the island, is the only city on the Isle of Man, and has the island's cathedral. Peel is the island's main fishing port and Peel Cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Sodor and Man.
Between May and August Peel is also one of the best places in the British Isles to see basking sharks from the shore. Often up to the length of a bus in size they regularly come within metres of the shoreline and surrounding cliffs.

ISLE OF MAN ~ Peel Castle -St Patrick's Isle ~
...Great castle view in a beautiful setting overlooking the Irish sea...a place steeped in history...Thanks a lot James!!
Peel Castle was originally a place of worship before becoming the fort of Magnus Barefoot, 11th century Viking King of Mann. The castle stands on St Patrick's Isle which is connected to the town by a causeway.
The buildings within the castle are now mostly ruined, but the outer walls remain intact. Excavations in 1982-87 revealed an extensive graveyard as well as the remains of Magnus Barefoot's original wooden fort. The most spectacular finds were the 10th century grave of "The Pagan Lady" which included a fine example of a Viking necklace and a cache of silver coins dating from about 1030.
The Castle's most famous "resident" is the so-called Moddey Dhoo or "Black Dog" ghost.

ISLE OF MAN ~Triskelion or the Three Legs Men ~
Nice postcard full with this intriguing symbol of the island... a self-governing British Crown Dependency, located in the Irish Sea...Thanks a lot James!
With matching The Three Legs of Man stamps.
(Issued 03-04-2013)

This symbol, the triskell (or triskelion), is an ancient symbol and it has been associated with the Isle of Man since the 13th century.
The triskell is featured the Celtic religion, and is said to represent the three dynamic elements: water, air, and fire.(but its age and origin are debatable) the three human legs bent at the knee, are conjoined at the upper thigh, the legs are armoured and spurred.

ISLE OF MAN ~ Flag-Keep Calm- Traa dy liooar ~
Received a great flag card with on the postcard "Traa dy Liooar"... Anglo-Manx for "time enough", the historic dialect of English spoken on the Isle of Man... Do you still speak this old dialect James???^__^ Thanks a lot!!

With lovely Isle of Man 2004 Manx National Heritage stamps: "The Story of Mann"
The flag of the Isle of Man consists of a red base with a "triskelion" (the symbol of Sicily and of the Isle of Man). It features three running legs, bent at the knee, conjoined at the center on an emblem in the center of it.
Local residents of the Isle of Man explain that the legs on the flag turn anti-clockwise so that they don't kneel to the British!
Before its adoption in 1931, the official flag of the Isle of Man was the Union Flag.
The 'triskelion' (a word from the Greek 'three-legged') is one of the oldest symbols known to mankind.

Located at the most Northerly tip of the Isle of Man, built in 1818 by Robert Stevenson. The Point of Ayre lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse on the Isle of Man.
The cast iron tower was placed at the edge of the sea about 225 m from the main light. In 1950, a concrete tower was built another 230 m seaward, and the historic tower was relocated atop the new tower.
