... Beautiful tranquil lake views in amazing surroundings... with a church on an islet, a medieval castle clinging to a rocky cliff and some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps... makes this charming and picturesque town of Bled Slovenia's most popular resort... no motorized boats are allowed on the Lake... the place for fun water activities like boating, swimming or just sitting on the banks... an easy walk around the lake takes about an hour and a half with many spots to stop for the perfect picture... Triglav National Park is located in the Julian Alps of north-western Slovenia.  It covers an area of 838 square km along the borders with Italy and Austria and was named after the highest mountain in the country; Mt. Triglav (2,864m), which rises to an elevation of 2864 metres.

It was first protected in 1924, when the Alpine Conservation Park was established. It was officially renamed Triglav National Park in 1961, but at this time it only encompassed the immediate vicinity of Mt. Triglav and the Valley of the Triglav Lakes. Its current area has been protected since 1981.

The park's most revered animal is the chamois, of which only 2,000 exist. Other wildlife includes ibex, marmot, golden eagles and the brown bear, although most animals stay away from humans and animal sightings are rare.

Common plant life includes the Julian poppy and the purple Zois bellflower. Most plants are protected.

SLOVENIA ~ Postojna Cave ~

...Amazing natural wonder... but the coolest part is that the postcard was sent from the only underground cave post office in the world with a special postmark....Thanks a lot Cendy!

The Postojna Caves started forming 3-4 million years ago  with over 21 km of passages, galleries and halls, 13 are open to the public (since 1819). It is the most famous cave in Europe.

Postojna cave was visited by thousands of tourists, and therefore, the cave management sent a request to the Austrian trade ministry in Vienna for the opening of a post office in the cave.

On 15 August 1899, next to the Dance Hall, 500 meters from the entrance to the cave, the first underground post office in the world was opened.

SLOVENIA ~Postojna cave~

A strange animal from Slovenia and a great nightview of Vilnius arrived today...
I found on the internet: The Proteus looks like a salamander but because of the pink skin and the small arms and legs, it looks also a bit like a small human. This is the reason why it is also called "HumanFish".... But when a looked at the card a bit longer and closer, I can't see any simularity with a Human or maybe with a looot of imagination! :) :)
And Lithuania, a part of the three Baltic States is a totally unknown country for me....Vilnius is Europeans capital of Culture in 2009

The mysterious Postojna cave world is a part of Slovenia which have been carved, shaped and created by water throughout millions of years. People from all over the world have admired the stalagmites and stalactites in 175 years of organized tourism. The 20km long underworld system is a miracle itself where this rare animal called "HumanFish" or Proteus lives, which habitat is limited to this region.
