GERMANY ~ Schumann House - Leipzig ~

... Nice view of the former home of the composer couple Robert and Clara Schumann (one of the most famous women in Germany)... they lived here the first four years of their marriage... visitors can now see the entire wing where the Schumanns‘ apartment was and enjoy the unique and authentic atmosphere which the Schumann-Haus has to offer... the museum has portraits, music, pianos, and other sentimental memorabilia, reflecting their happy and yet tragic life together... what is truly special and unique about the house is the fact that it is a museum within a independent full-time primary school “Clara Schumann”, with a concentration in music... it's one of the few examples of classicist architecture preserved in Leipzig... with wonderful matching stamp❤️ and special postmark❤️ to celebrate Clara's 200th birthday...  Thanks a lot Dustin!【ツ】
The house had been built in 1838 in neo-classical style by Friedrich August Scheidel.

Following their marriage in September 1840, Robert and Clara Schumann had their first joint flat on the piano nobile of this classicist building and lived there until 1844.

Over that period, some of the most important compositions of Robert Schumann were created, including the “Spring Symphony” and the three string quartets Op. 41, dedicated to Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

Clara Schumann (1819 - 1896) was a pianist, composer, piano teacher and the first to perform many works by her husband and by Brahms in public.

GERMANY ~ Eifel National Park ~

.... Many lovely views of one of Germany’s 16 national parks... forests and lakes are mixed with grasslands and shrubs so the landscape is constantly changing... it was the first conservation area that protected the upland beech forests... these trees were once the dominating vegetation in Germany and Central Europe... the forest had been used to produce timber for a long time and had experienced massive deforestation... they are now being transformed into wild, unspoilt woodland... you can discover the beautiful nature on trails that run through wonderful spots of untouched nature... home to the largest population of wild cats in Central Europe... the park now protects more than 2.170 endangered plant and animal species... Thanks a lot Sabine!【ツ】
The Eifel National Park extends over an area of approx. 110 square kilometres in the middle of the Hohes Venn Eifel nature park and is located in North Rhine-Westphalia. The park, which was  established in 2004 is still classed as a “National Park in development”.

GERMANY ~ Fugger and Welser Museum - Augsburg ~

... Beautiful interesting little museum in a significant and uniquely preserved fabric Renaissance building... it presents the histories of the most important Augsburg merchant families of the late 15th and 16thC, the Fuggers and the Welsers... who left an indelible mark not just on Augsburg, but also Europe and the rest of the world... the Fuggers especially, and the Welsers to a lesser extent were the major financiers of the Holy Roman Emperor, the Catholic Church and the development of trade with the New World and Asia... the Fuggers for instance took over from the de’ Medici family and had the European copper economy nailed down, while the Welsers’ power stretched to new German territories in the Americas like Venezuela... it is quite new, very informative and you really learn about these two super rich families... the museum tries to create an impression of the period through movies, ambient sound, projections and interactive displays... and with for us "postcard lovers"❤️ a really great special postmark to celebrate 150 years of postcards👍... Thanks a lot dear Dustin!!✿◕ ‿ ◕✿
"Augsburg is the German Florence, and the Fuggers are a match for the Medici."
                                                                                             Philip Melanchthon -16thC

The third oldest German city after Neuss and Trier, Augsburg was founded by the Romans in 15BC.

The Fugger and Welser Museum is housed in the Renaissance building Wieselhaus, built around 1530 by another local figure, Johanne Wiesel, a successful optician of Augsburg who developed microscopes and telescopes as well as eye glasses. After 1550 the side building was extended. The arcades were walled up in the 17thC. They were re-opened and glazed as part of the extensive renovation of the building, and as a result the monument has regained its Latin flair.

GERMANY ~ Old Town Hall - Bamberg - UNESCO ~

... Lovely view of the towns highlight... the unique Altes Rathaus located on an artificial island above the river Regnitz... on one side of the Old Town Hall, there’s a half-timbered building... on the other side, there are impressive frescoes painted across the length of both walls... a town with more than 1.000 years of history... the basic structure of the town remained untouched through the centuries...  unlike most other German towns it was little damaged in World War II... the medieval and baroque town houses and squares are well preserved and most of the streets remain cobbled... an architectural gem... Thanks a lot Sabine!ツ

Bamberg is a town in Upper Franconia, (part of the German state of Bavaria) on the river Regnitz close to its confluence with the river Main.

The old town hall of Bamberg was built in 1386 in the middle of the Regnitz River, accessible by two bridges. According to legend the bishop of Bamberg did not grant the citizens any land for the construction of a town hall. This prompted the townsfolk to ram stakes into the river Regnitz to create an artificial island, on which they built the town hall they so badly wanted.

The Old Town, Bamberg  became a  UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

The triple-nave cross-shaped basilica is in Brick Gothic, a building style typical of the Hanseatic port cities of northern Germany.

The huge tower with a baroque lantern at the top was not completed until the end of the18thC.

GERMANY ~ Quedlinburg - UNESCO ~

... Great aerial view of a charming small medieval town with the largest number of half-timbered houses in Germany... the narrow, cobblestone streets are lined with over 1300 half-timbered houses... it has a nice market square with the town hall and the Roland statue, the Castle Hill with the Collegiate Church St Servatius, and several other churches...  the authentic Middle Ages urban layout has hardly changed in the 700 years that have passed... it's like stepping back in time... this city along with the other cities in the region truly represent some hidden gems in the Harz mountains of northern Germany... with "of course"😉 a lovely special postmark... Thanks you very much Dustin!!(✿ ♥‿♥)

Quedlinburg is a City in the state of Saxony-Anhalt and lies on the Bode River, in the northern foothills of the Lower Harz Mountains, southwest of Magdeburg.

Founded in 922 as a fortress by Henry I (the Fowler), it became a favourite residence of the Saxon emperors, and in 968 Otto I founded an imperial abbey there (with his daughter Mathilda as abbess), which was secularized in 1803. A member of the Hanseatic League until 1477, the city then came under the protection of the electors of Saxony until it passed to Brandenburg in 1698.

The church, castle, and old town were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994.

GERMANY ~ Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice - Magdeburg ~

... Beautiful (southeast) view of the oldest Gothic-style church in the country... its location on the Elbe river makes it even more impressive... a famous city landmark... fine example of medieval architecture blending the history and culture of the area... because it took over 300 years to complete, you can see different buildings styles being used throughout... luckily, it’s two towers survived bombings in World War II.... after the war, the rest of the church got restored... one of the main sights here is the burial site of Otto the Great... with great special "European Elections" postmark... Thanks a lot Dustin and Good Luck with your thesis🤞!!【ツ】
Magdeburg Cathedral, officially called the Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice is a Protestant cathedral. The first church built in 937 at the location of the current cathedral was an abbey called St. Maurice, dedicated to Saint Maurice; the current cathedral was started from 1209, and the completion of the steeples took place only in 1520.

Magdeburg Cathedral is important because:
It’s the burial place for Otto the Great, the first German Holy Roman Emperor, the first church constructed in Gothic style on German soil and the largest consecrated space in east Germany.

In the 10thC, Magdeburg was the home of Holy Roman Emperor Otto I (“Otto the Great”) and later Otto von Guericke, a politician and scientist who lived in Magdeburg through the difficult period during and after the Thirty Years’ War and worked as the city’s urban planner, protector and mayor for about 50 years. With these two important Otto’s shaping the history and future of Magdeburg, it’s perhaps of no surprise then that the city often gets dubbed as “Otto’s City”.

GERMANY ~ Family Portrait - Rembrandt van Rijn - Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum ~

... Beautiful painting by Rembrandt van Rijn with great matching postmark👍... this year it will be 350 years since Rembrandt died at the age of 63...  this portrait of a family belongs to the late works of Rembrandt... he painted it not long before his death (1666-68)...  unfortunately the family have not been identified.... the work is owned by the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig... Thanks a lot Dustin for once more a unique item! (✿ ♥‿♥)
Rembrandt Harmensz.van Rijn  (1606-1669) is one of the most famous Dutch masters of the 17thC born in Leiden. The style period in which Rembrandt made his paintings, drawings and etchings is known as the Baroque.

The Dutch painter, draftsman and etcher Rembrandt van Rijn knew many highs and lows in his life. Despite his success, he was unable to get his finances in order and, after the death of his first wife, he refused to remarry, with all its consequences. He was taken to court by his former housekeeper, fathered an illegitimate child with his new girlfriend, and was declared bankrupt as a blow. Rembrandt was also unfortunately not granted a quiet old age, he lost his then girlfriend Hendrickje to the plague and survived his only son Titus. All the dramas Rembrandt had experienced in his life caused his painting style to change - to his disadvantage - over the years and by the time he died there was virtually no demand for his work.

Founded in 1754, the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig is one of the oldest museums in Europe. It houses an important collection of Western old master paintings.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber  is a town in the district of Ansbach of Mittelfranken (Middle Franconia), the Franconia region of Bavari. It is part of the popular Romantic Road through southern Germany.
Rothenburg was a Free Imperial City from the late Middle Ages to 1803.

The name "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" is German for "Red fortress above the Tauber". This is so because the town is located on a plateau overlooking the Tauber River. As to the name "Rothenburg", some say it comes from the German words rot (red) and burg (burgh, medieval fortified settlement), referring to the red colour of the roofs of the houses which overlook the river.

"🐣Frohe Ostern🐣 dear Dustin and 🔔Happy Easter🔔 to all my postcard and blog friends!!"
The Magdeburg Cultural History Museum was opened in 1906 and its first director Theodor Volbehr (1862-1931) took over many art and craft collections from various societies and from the city which were exhibited in the centre of the museum as the most important witnesses to Magdeburg's rich past.

The building was planned and erected by the Viennese architect Friedrich Ohmann. Architectural elements were used to recall the splendour of Renaissance and Gothic style.  The eastern building was added in a second construction phase in 1912-1913.

The museum was partially destroyed at the end of the Second World War and suffered the nearly complete loss of its valuable exhibits which had been stored in other places for safe keeping. Reconstruction work began in 1945/46 and for practical reasons the Museum of Nature was added to the former Cultural Museum.

Founded in Weimar in 1919, it moved to Dessau in 1925 and was forced to close in Berlin by the National Socialists in 1933, the Bauhaus existed for only 14 years. Nevertheless, the famous university of design wrote history, stands for Made in Germany, and provides important stimuli and impulses to questions of the present.

The Bauhaus buildings in Weimar, Dessau and Bernau are fundamental representatives of Classical Modernism, directed towards a radical renewal of architecture and design. The cubic buildings document the quest for building typification by using identical elements coupled with the highest architectural quality.

This house built in 1926 is part of the Meisterhaus ensemble and, together with the other master houses, has belonged to the Bauhaus UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
