NORWAY ~ Bergen - UNESCO ~

... Pretty view of the colourful iconic old timber wharfside buildings... one of Bergen's and Norway's main attractions... Unesco Bryggen wharf dates back to the Hanseatic era... Norway's second largest city... beautifully located right in the heart of the Fjord Norway region... midway between the main Sognefjord and the Hardangerfjord... so it is the perfect starting point for day trips to one of the world’s biggest scenic attractions, "the fjords"... surrounded by 7 mountains... picturesque Bergen is a “must-see” city in Norway... Big Thanks dear Andrene!! (✿ ♥‿♥) I wonder if nature is really so magical and impressive as shown on my postcards... would love to see it myself one day!!💚

Bergen is located in the southern part of the west coast of Norway. The name Bergen derives from the word Bjørgvin, which translates as "the meadow below the mountains".

Bryggen has been ravaged by many fires, the great fire of 1702 in particular. It reduced the whole of the city to ashes. The area was rebuilt on the foundations that had been there since the 12th century, which means that Bryggen is basically unchanged despite the passing centuries

German merchants of the Hanseatic League lived in Bryggen from the mid-14thC for the best part of 400 years, trading in dried fish and grain.

Most of these buildings are on the UNESCO WHS list since 1979.

NORWAY ~ Nærøyfjord - Gudvangen - UNESCO ~

... Breathtakingly beautiful scenery of one of the World’s Greatest Landscapes...  one of the longest, deepest and narrowest fjords on Earth... the Nærøyfjor, with its steep mountainside, hanging valleys, towering peaks, snowfields, waterfalls and small hamlets, is the most outstanding natural attraction in Norway... the stunning landscapes of Fjord Norway are created by ice and rock during the last Ice Age... and since then the landscape has stayed pretty much the same... there is be said that Nærøyfjord was used as inspiration for Disney’s fictional kingdom of Arendelle in the movie Frozen... and I must say the landscape looks straight out of a fairytale... the fjord is one of multiple highlights on several of our tours... more than 400.000 visit this fjord every year😲... Thanks a lot Tone!!【ツ】

Gudvangen is a village in the municipality of Aurland in Sogn og Fjordane county. It is located at the end of the Nærøyfjord where the Nærøydalselvi river empties into the fjord.

The Nærøyfjord is a 17 kilometre long branch of the Aurlandsfjord. It is only 250 meters at the narrowest, and more than one kilometer at the widest. The depth varies between 10 and 500 meters. The surrounding mountains are up to more than 1400 meters high.

The Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord are two of many fjordarms in the 204 km long Sognefjord. The Nærøyfjord is the best known of the many arms of the Sognefjord.

The name Nærøyfjord origin from the norse god ‘Njord’, the God of the Seafarer and the sea.

In 2005, the Nærøyfjord became a part of UNESCO’s World Heritage together with the Geirangerfjord.

NORWAY ~ Røros Mining Town - UNESCO ~

... Great view of Røros Church a landmark standing at the top of this charming historic town... one of the oldest towns of wooden buildings in Europe... and one of the coldest in Norway... the modern-day inhabitants of Røros still work and live in the characteristic 17th and 18thC buildings... even though the copper mines have closed  there is still a former smelting hut, now home to a museum... Olavsgruva Mine, which offers tours 50m underground... a living museum... and popular spot for Norwegian tourists... Thanks a lot Tone!!【ツ】

Røros Mining Town and the Circumferenc is an area within a 45km radius around the town. Røros Copper Works held the monopoly to exploit the natural and human resources. Work was done under severe climatic conditions, and ways were found to adapt to it for example via the 'Winter Transport Route' on frozen lakes and rivers. Mining was established in the 17th century and exploited for 333 years until 1977.

Completely rebuilt after its destruction by Swedish troops in 1679, Røros contains about 2000 wooden one- and two-storey houses and a smelting house.

Røros Mining Town and the Circumference became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.

NORWAY ~ Kjeragbolten - Lysefjorden ~

... A masterpiece of nature... there are more than a thousand fjords in Norway...  Kjeragbolten is one of the most popular hikes and attracts many visitors... it is a popular spot for BASE jumping and for taking photos on top of this giant rock squeezed between the huge cracks of the mountain... it is supposed to bring good luck to climb out on the boulder without help of any mountaineering equipment or security net... as myself being afraid of heights I would definitely take a pass even if it meant giving up a little good luck ʘ͜͡ʘ... just looking at this picture makes my knees go all wiggly and weak... would any of my blog readers dare to do the same as the person on this card?????
Thanks a lot Tone!!ヽ(ヅ)ノ

Kjeragbolten is a massive 5 m³ boulder glacial deposit wedged between two cliffs located on the mountain Kjerag  in Rogaland county high above Lysefjord. It is suspended above a 984-metre (3,228 ft) deep abyss.

Lysefjord is a fjord located in Ryfylke in south-western Norway. The name means light fjord, and is said to be derived from the lightly coloured granite rocks along its sides.

The fjord was carved by the action of glaciers in the ice ages and was flooded by the sea when the later glaciers retreated. In total, it measures 42 km (23 miles) with rocky walls falling nearly vertically over 1000 m (3,000 ft) into the water.

NORWAY ~ Hell station ~

...Great postcard showing an evening scene of the railway with fiery looking sky...scary and beautiful at the same time...my previous "Hell" card came from the USA....maybe there are more towns called "Hell" ???...the district has become a tourist attraction because of its name⁀⊙﹏☉⁀ ...Thanks a lot Isabell.
 "Evening mood Hell station"

Hell is a small Norwegian village located next to Trondheim. The name Hell stems from the Old Norse word hellir, which means "overhang" or "cliff cave". It has a more used homonym in modern Norwegian that means "luck".

Even more curious for tourists is the sign above the cargo entrance to the train station that reads ‘Hell Gods Expedition" which is the archaic spelling of the word for "cargo handling". There hasn't been a baggage of freight office here for decades.

NORWAY ~Vemork Power Plant - UNESCO ~

...A great piece of industrial heritage surrounded by beautiful scenery...Thanks a lot Joey!!

The town of Rjukan is situated in a deep valley in the mountainous southern Norway,  where the sun shines via huge mirrors and mighty waterfalls plunge from high cliffs into deep gorges below.

Vemork is the name of a hydroelectric power plant outside Rjukan in Tinn. The plant was built by Norsk Hydro and opened in 1911, its main purpose being to fix nitrogen for the production of fertilizer. Vemork was later the site of the first plant in the world to mass-produce heavy water developing from the hydrogen production then used for the Haber process. During World War II, Vemork was the target of Norwegian heavy water sabotage operations. The heavy water plant was closed in 1971, and in 1988 the power station became the Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum.

In the museum  you can see exhibitions about industry and the industrial worker, the dramatic sabotages on the heavy water production plant and the race to develop an atom bomb.

Hanging valleys are found on both sides and can be seen as bowl-shaped openings high up on the hillsides.

The Nærøyfjord is perhaps the most spectacular arm of the Sognefjord, and the narrowest fjord in the world, at one point only 250 metres across, with mountains towering more than 1,700 metres above its tranquil waters. Offering some amazing sights with the cliffs on either side of the water rising  into the sky vertically, it’s the second largest fjord in the world and the largest in Norway – 205 km.The fjord reaches a maximum depth of 1,308 m below sea level and it’s 4.5 km wide on average.

NORWAY ~Alta rockcarvings- UNESCO ~

..Impressive well-preserved ancient art...Thanks a lot Jo for another wonderful UNESCO site of your country!!

With great stamp: Wild animals of Norway
The Golden Eagle (Issued 29-03-2006)
The Rock Art of Alta consists of more than 5000 carvings and paintings on several sites around Alta. They were discovered in 1972. The main site contains around 3000 individual carvings and has been turned into an open-air museum. The earliest carvings in the area date to around 4200 BC; the most recent carvings are generally dated to around 500 BC.

They are primordial evidence of the fauna, representing reindeer, elks, bears, dogs and/or wolves, foxes, hares, geese, ducks, swans, cormorants, halibut, salmon and whales, and of the environment. They also depict boating, hunting, trapping and fishing scenes, as well as people taking part in dances and ritual acts. In the final phase, some agricultural activities, rendered precarious by the climate, appear to have supplemented certain staples traditionally provided by hunting and fishing.

The Rock Art of Alta was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List 3rd December, 1885. The reason the rock art was entered on the list was that it is the most meaningful evidence of pre-historic human activity that exists in the north European region.

The meridian column on Fuglenes in Hammerfest is a modest monument to one of the biggest scientific tasks in the world: that of measuring the planet itself. It marks the start of a 2820 km arc that ends in the Black Sea.

Hammerfest is the northernmost town in the world and at that time the most northerly place in the world that scientists could reasonably travel to - and it marks the north end of the arc. It was here that Meridian Column was erected in 1854.

In 2005, 34 of the triangulation points – the ones that are distinguished by a landmark – became protected and included as cultural memorials on the UNESCO world heritage list. This makes it the longest inscription on the WHS.
