CANADA ~ Pitcher Plant - Newfoundland and Labrador ~

... Lovely view of the most unusual of Canada's official flowers... unique compared to all others... every province has a floral symbol that represents something about their province or territory.... the Pitcher plant was first chosen as a symbol of Newfoundland by Queen Victoria, to be engraved on the newly-minted Newfoundland penny... in 1954 the Newfoundland Cabinet designated this interesting plant as the official flower of the province... it was used on the island's coinage until 1938... sent to celebrate "World Postcard Day" on October 1st😊... The pitcher plant is commonly found growing in bogs both in Labrador and on the island of Newfoundland. 

Carnivorous plants grow in soil that has little nitrogen. All living things must have nitrogen. Carnivorous plants get nitrogen from the insects they eat.

This plant, named for its pitcher-like shaped leaves at the base of its stem, lures in insects and other small animals by using its brightly coloured red veins as a means of attraction.

CANADA ~ Mistaken Point - New Foundland - UNESCO ~

... Fascinating  new Canadian UNESCO site👍... one of the world's greatest fossil sites due to the age, variety, and abundance of fossils found there.... a destination shrouded in mystery and full of intrigue and wonder, where you can walk on strange and ancient rocks and view the place where life began... these spectacularly preserved fossils date back hundreds of millions of years... the oldest-known evidence of Earth's first, large, complex, multicellular life forms... the only way to officially access this site is to take part in a guided tour... the name "Mistaken Point" apparently comes from past shipwreck events in the area due to sailors mistaking this point for another and the difficultly of navigating in the treacherous waters surrounding the point (over fifty ships are known to have been wrecked in the area)... Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve is located at the south-eastern tip of the island of Newfoundland, in eastern Canada.

It covers a total land area of 146 hectares with a buffer zone of 74 hectares and consists of a narrow, 17 km-long strip of rugged coastal cliffs. Of deep marine origin, these cliffs date to the Ediacaran Period (580-560 million years ago), representing the oldest known assemblages of large fossils anywhere. These fossils illustrate a watershed in the history of life on earth: the appearance of large, biologically complex organisms, after almost three billion years of micro-dominated evolution.

Mistaken Point is a natural UNESCO World Heritage Site in Canada since 2016.

CANADA ~ L'Anse aux Meadows - Newfoundland - UNESCO ~

... An amazing new UNESCO site👍... set against a stunning backdrop of rugged cliffs, bog, and coastline... this unique archaeological site has grown into an entire open-air museum showcasing the breadth of Viking culture and history in North America.... L’Anse aux Meadows has an powerful place in the history of the human migrations... we all learned in history classes how in 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean and arrived in North America... but did you know that 5 centuries before him, vikings from Greenland were actually the first Europeans to set foot in North America??... Parks Canada built the Viking Encampment near the excavation site, using traditional Norse construction methods, to show visitors how the Norse settlers of long ago might have lived... today, you can visit reproductions of a Norse longhouse, small house/workshop, hut, furnace and discover original artifacts (even with a few costumed actors)...

L'Anse aux Meadows from the French L'Anse à la Médée or ("Medea Cove"), is an archaeological site on the northernmost tip of the Great Northern Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Discovered in 1960 by explorer Helge Ingstad and his wife, archaeologist Anne Stineit who excavated it and found artifacts proving it was a Norse settlement. It is the only certain site of a Norse or Viking settlement in North America.

It was named a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1978.

Cape Spear is located near to St. John's, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador.

 In 1836 a lighthouse was built here at the entrance to St. John's Harbor: it was the second light to offer aid along the Newfoundland's coast.

 After 119 years of service the old light was decommissioned and a new concrete building was built to house the light in 1955. The 11m (35 ft) white octagonal concrete tower is the current active lighthouse on the postcard. It is located about 180 m (200 yd) northeast of the original lighthouse.
