USA ~ Lincoln Memorial - Washington ~

... Great views of the iconic and impressive memorial built to honor the 16th U.S. president who guided the nation through Civil War... the building contains Lincoln’s gigantic marble statue... as an enduring symbol of Freedom and Unity, the Lincoln Memorial is a testament to the life and legacy of the President... a reminder of the powerful events that have taken place over the years... it has been the setting of many famous speeches... it continues to be an important part of American history and culture, and a source of inspiration for generations to come... it is among the city most popular tourist attractions, with more than seven million visitors annually.... a must-see for every visitor to the nation’s capital... Thanks a lot Len!【ツ】

The Memorial was designed by architect Henry Bacon and was dedicated on May 30, 1922.
The architect  drew inspiration from classical antiquity. The arcade consists of 36 Doric columns representing the states forming the Union at the time of Lincoln’s death in 1865. The names of the states and the date of statehood were inscribed on the frieze above the colonnade. Since Hawaii and Alaska joined the Union in 1959, their names are not included in the attic. Instead, a grey granite plaque was added on the Lincoln Memorial’s steps, recognizing their statehood.

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

USA ~ Mount Rainier National Park - Washington ~

... Lovely view of one of the many beautiful snow scenes that can be found at the park during winter months... it is the 5th oldest national park in the US... best known for its glacier-capped volcano which is in the center of the park... Mount Rainier stands as an icon in the Washington landscape... over 230,000 acres of glacial valleys, ancient forests and sub alpine flower meadows surround Mount Rainier... the park is a popular destination for hiking, backpacking and mountain climbing in some of Washington state’s most stunning landscapes...  at least 1,5 million people visit Mount Rainier National Park every year... Thanks a lot Christie! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mount Rainier National Park is located in Southwest Washington state and became a National Park in 1899 with a size of  235,625 acres (954 km²). It is an active volcano that last erupted about 1,000 years ago and is 14,410 feet tall. Mount Rainier has at least 25 glaciers (named) and several other unnamed snowfields.

In total, you can find 65 species of mammals, 14 different species of amphibians, 5 types of reptiles, 182 types of birds and 14 different types of indigenous fish.

Native American tribes referred to the mountain as Talol, which means “mother of waters”, Tacoma which means “place where the water begins”, or Tahoma, which means “snowy peak”. The mountain was then named Rainier in 1792 by the British explorer George Vancouver for his friend Pete Rainier (Pete Rainier never visited Mount Rainier). To this day there is still some argument of changing back to the original name of Tahoma.

USA ~National Postal Museum - Owney - Washington~

Postcard for this Weekends theme - Museum/university/library and I'm glad to share one I really love... ➜ ➜ read more: Connections to the World!

...A perfect choice of postcard... nice view from the Postal Museum especially for a postcard and dog lover... with such a lovely story attached... would like to visit it someday... and fantastic special stamp cancellation... Thanks a lot Kathy!! (✿ ♥‿♥)

The National Postal Museum, a Smithsonian Institution museum, is located in the old Post Office building next to Union Station in Washington, D.C. The Museum was created by an agreement between the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Postal Service in 1990 and opened to the public in 1993.

Story about Owney:
A stray mutt wandered into an Albany, New York post office in 1888 and eventually became the unofficial mascot of the Railway Mail Service. He rode with mail mail bags on trains across the country protecting the precious cargo along the way. Railway man clerks attached medals and tags,(when he jogs along, they jingle like the bells on a junk wagon)  to his collar to record the dog's travels and in 1895 Owney traveled with mailbags on steamships to Asia and across Europe.
The story of Owney is told in the exhibition "Mail by Rail" in the museum gallery "Moving the Mail".

Clara Barton National Site in Glen Echo, Maryland was established in 1974 and was the first National Park Service honoring the accomplishments of an American woman. The home reflects Clara Barton's unique blend of professional and personal life.

Clara Barton (December 25, 1821 – April 12, 1912) was a pioneer American teacher, patent clerk, nurse, and humanitarian. At a time when relatively few women worked outside the home, Barton built a career helping others. One of her greatest accomplishments was founding the American Red Cross. This organization helps victims of war and disasters. She was never married, but had a relationship with John J. Elwell.

Although this house has only 11 rooms, it's well worth a visit. The Glen Echo residence showcases the Red Cross founder's dedication to her cause. Built in 1891, the home's design is unusual featuring halls lined with closets filled with blankets, lanterns and other disaster relief supplies. Barton's office is of particular interest. Glen Echo is a fascinating glimpse into this prolific woman's life.

USA ~ OBAMA's second inauguration 2013 ~

This is a such fantastic postcard... Like million other people I watched the ceremony live on TV... I don't know much about politics but it was a very moving event and the Obama family looked really handsome!!
...What makes this postcard even more special is that she was not only sent on the day of the swearing-in but also posted a few blocks from the US capitol...
And for sure Max, it makes me feel closer to this historical moment!! Thanks, Thanks, Thanks Max!!

With lovely flag stamps:The U.S. Postal Service continues its tradition of honoring the Stars and Stripes with the issue of the Four Flags (Forever serie) stamps, this ones represents "Freedom-Liberty and Justice".
For more than two hundred years America’s citizens have witnessed the Inauguration ceremonies of the President and Vice President of the United States. From the first Inauguration of George Washington, in New York City, in 1789, to today, as we prepare for the 57th quadrennial Presidential Inauguration, the swearing-in ceremonies represents both national renewal and continuity of leadership. As each president has offered a vision for America’s future, we reflect on the heritage of Inaugurations past.

USA ~Seattle~

My second "surprise" card this week...Amazing skyline, great architecture and beautiful cloudy sky... Especially with the famous "Space Needle" that I recognize from the serie Grey's Anatomy.:D Thanks a lot Irene!!

Nice stamp too!
Seattle is a hilly city, surrounded by water and mountains, so there are many viewpoints to get a great view of the Seattle skyline. Perhaps none are more photographed than the view from Kerry Park on Seattle’s Queen Anne Hill. The park offers a perfect view of downtown Seattle.

Built in 1962, the Space Needle served as the symbol of that year's World's Fair. It has since become the symbol of Seattle, and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and a symbol of Seattle. The privately owned Space Needle is managed by Space Needle LLC.

USA ~Washington, D.C.

Great view of the impressive Capitol building, one of the most symbolically important buildings in the world and a D.C.'s landmark...(USA-1548433). The sender wrote that it is much more impressive in person... but to me it looks already amazing on a postcard...:D:D Thanks Heather!

With nice stamps too!!

The United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., is a symbol of the American people and their government, the meeting place of the nation's legislature. The Capitol also houses an important collection of American art, and it is an architectural achievement in its own right. It is a working office building as well as a tourist attraction visited by millions every year.
From the back of the card:
The exquisite landscaping around the Capitol was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the creator of Central Park in New York. Many of the trees are so rare that they are marked with their names.
