GERMANY ~ Museum August Kestner - Hanover ~

... Nice view of the oldest museum of the State Capital founded more than 120 years ago... surrounded by a listed glass-concrete facade (1961)... inside there are still parts of the stairwell and the side wings as well as almost the entire entrance facade of the original first museum building... it shows 6000 years of applied art in four areas: ancient and Egyptian cultures, applied art from the Middle Ages to modern design and one of the largest collections of coins and medals in Northern Germany...  besides its permanent collection, the Museum also hosts a variety of special exhibitions throughout the whole year... but also this museum is closed for now and will reopen in April... with as usual a great special postmark about the "180th anniversary of the first stamp in Prussia"👍... Museum August Kestner, previously Kestner-Museum was founded in 1889. On the 230th birthday of August Kestner, the house was renamed 'Museum August Kestner'.

Museum August Kestner is centered on the collections of August Kestner and his nephew Hermann Kestner, later followed by the collections of Friedrich Culemann and Friedrich Wilhelm von Bissing.

GERMANY ~ Neuschwanstein Castle - Hohenschwangau - Bavaria ~

... Beautiful view of one of the most famous castles in the world🏰...  an iconic architectural marvel... nestled away in the breathtaking views of the Bavarian Alps it is one of the top sights and attractions in Germany... it was constructed as a fantastic private summer retreat born straight from King Ludwig II imagination, not for defense but for pleasure... and in honour of composer Richard Wagner... however, the king never got to enjoy it; he mysteriously died by drowning in nearby Lake Starnberg... in addition to its strange origins, the castle is a wonder... there are turrets and even flush toilets and a form of central heating... approximately 1.4 million visitors travel to the fairy-tale palace each year... in the summer around 6,000 visitors a day stream through rooms that were intended for a single inhabitant😲... tours take crowds of visitors through the apartments and staterooms on the third and fourth floors... the second floor was never finished and houses a shop, a cafeteria, and a multimedia room... with great special "Georg II, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen"  cancellation👍!! Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19thC Romanesque Revival palace located in southwest Bavaria. King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned the castle in 1868, just two years after Austria and Bavaria were conquered by Prussia during the Austro-Prussian War (sometimes called the Seven Weeks’ War), effectively stripping Ludwig II of his powers.

He died in 1886, and the final towers weren’t completed until 1892. Seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II in 1886, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public.

Neuschwanstein means “New Swan Stone”. The name of the castle derives from one of Wagner’s opera’s character, the Swan Knight.

GERMANY ~ Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice - Magdeburg ~

... Beautiful (southeast) view of the oldest Gothic-style church in the country... its location on the Elbe river makes it even more impressive... a famous city landmark... fine example of medieval architecture blending the history and culture of the area... because it took over 300 years to complete, you can see different buildings styles being used throughout... luckily, it’s two towers survived bombings in World War II.... after the war, the rest of the church got restored... one of the main sights here is the burial site of Otto the Great... with great special "European Elections" postmark... Magdeburg Cathedral, officially called the Cathedral of Saints Catherine and Maurice is a Protestant cathedral.The first church built in 937 at the location of the current cathedral was an abbey called St. Maurice, dedicated to Saint Maurice; the current cathedral was started from 1209, and the completion of the steeples took place only in 1520.

Magdeburg Cathedral is important because:
It’s the burial place for Otto the Great, the first German Holy Roman Emperor, the first church constructed in Gothic style on German soil and the largest consecrated space in east Germany.

In the 10thC, Magdeburg was the home of Holy Roman Emperor Otto I (“Otto the Great”) and later Otto von Guericke, a politician and scientist who lived in Magdeburg through the difficult period during and after the Thirty Years’ War and worked as the city’s urban planner, protector and mayor for about 50 years. With these two important Otto’s shaping the history and future of Magdeburg, it’s perhaps of no surprise then that the city often gets dubbed as “Otto’s City”.

GERMANY ~ Family Portrait - Rembrandt van Rijn - Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum ~

... Beautiful painting by Rembrandt van Rijn with great matching postmark👍... this year it will be 350 years since Rembrandt died at the age of 63...  this portrait of a family belongs to the late works of Rembrandt... he painted it not long before his death (1666-68)...  unfortunately the family have not been identified.... the work is owned by the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig... Thanks a lot Dustin for once more a unique item! (✿ ♥‿♥)

Rembrandt Harmensz.van Rijn  (1606-1669) is one of the most famous Dutch masters of the 17thC born in Leiden. The style period in which Rembrandt made his paintings, drawings and etchings is known as the Baroque.

The Dutch painter, draftsman and etcher Rembrandt van Rijn knew many highs and lows in his life. Despite his success, he was unable to get his finances in order and, after the death of his first wife, he refused to remarry, with all its consequences. He was taken to court by his former housekeeper, fathered an illegitimate child with his new girlfriend, and was declared bankrupt as a blow. Rembrandt was also unfortunately not granted a quiet old age, he lost his then girlfriend Hendrickje to the plague and survived his only son Titus. All the dramas Rembrandt had experienced in his life caused his painting style to change - to his disadvantage - over the years and by the time he died there was virtually no demand for his work.

Founded in 1754, the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum in Braunschweig is one of the oldest museums in Europe. It houses an important collection of Western old master paintings.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber  is a town in the district of Ansbach of Mittelfranken (Middle Franconia), the Franconia region of Bavari. It is part of the popular Romantic Road through southern Germany.
Rothenburg was a Free Imperial City from the late Middle Ages to 1803.

The name "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" is German for "Red fortress above the Tauber". This is so because the town is located on a plateau overlooking the Tauber River. As to the name "Rothenburg", some say it comes from the German words rot (red) and burg (burgh, medieval fortified settlement), referring to the red colour of the roofs of the houses which overlook the river.

GERMANY ~ Emperor Otto Hall - Cultural History Museum - Magdeburg ~

Great museum postcard nr 4... especially waited to post it this Easter weekend because of the so cute and wonderful Easter postmark🥚🐰🥚... this postcard shows one of most beautiful rooms of the city...  the medieval Kaiser-Otto-Saal... with its 200 seats it can serve as a room for sophisticated ambience or events....the museum regularly presents special exhibitions on special themes related to art and cultural history... at the moment one about modern architecture...

The Magdeburg Cultural History Museum was opened in 1906 and its first director Theodor Volbehr (1862-1931) took over many art and craft collections from various societies and from the city which were exhibited in the centre of the museum as the most important witnesses to Magdeburg's rich past.

The building was planned and erected by the Viennese architect Friedrich Ohmann. Architectural elements were used to recall the splendour of Renaissance and Gothic style.  The eastern building was added in a second construction phase in 1912-1913.

The museum was partially destroyed at the end of the Second World War and suffered the nearly complete loss of its valuable exhibits which had been stored in other places for safe keeping. Reconstruction work began in 1945/46 and for practical reasons the Museum of Nature was added to the former Cultural Museum.

Great detailed cartoon map card... with the most adorable stamp and special postmark😍... even though only parts of the National Parks border region are included on the map I'm gonna ad it to my NP collection... the destination for active holidays and water-based fun... you can go for a a walk on the Dam... the cute stamp shows "Gruffalo" from a children's book by author Julia Donaldson... first published in 1999 and continues to be a popular read aloud.... the illustrations by Axel Scheffler are filled with bold color, detail and appealing characters... the Gruffalo is the story of a clever mouse, three large animals that want to eat him and an imaginary monster, a Gruffalo, who turns out to be only too real...to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Gruffalo the German Post issued this lovely stamp... The Edersee is an 11.8 km² reservoir in Waldeck-Frankenberg, Hesse with 199.3 million m³ of storage space. It has the 2nd largest area, and the 3rd largest volume, of all reservoirs in Germany. It is located on the Fulda Tributary of Eder behind the 48m high Edersee Dam.

The Edersee Dam is a hydroelectric dam constructed between 1908 to 1914 across the Eder river. The dam is primarily used hydroelectric power generation and to regulate water levels for shipping on the Weser river.

Lake Edersee is surrounded by more than 50 hills, which are covered by a sea of beech trees covering almost 6,000 hectares.

"we found the fabric"💙... according to European folklore, the stork is responsible for bringing babies to new parents... the legend is very ancient, but was popularized by Hans Christian Andersen story called The Storks... the natural behaviour of storks lends a clue to their association with birth... as a migratory bird, white storks would fly south in the fall and return to Europe nine months later in Spring when many babies were born... with so sweet "matching"????😄 Valentine's Day postmarks...  coming from the only French village with the name Saint-Valentin (Departement of Indre) that has every year a special postmark... this is showing two hearts and a pictorial cancellation featuring the famous Peynet's lovers... Alsace is one of the 26 regions of France. It is on the eastern border of France and lies on the west bank of the Upper Rhine, next to Germany and Switzerland. Its capital and largest city is Strasbourg.

Storks usually live near shallow bodies of water where they wade through the water, and catch small animals, like frogs, crabs, or small fish. Many species of stork are migratory, they spend the summer and the winter in different places. The best known stork is the White Stork. It is known to build large nests in high places, like on chimneys. Stork nests are often very large. They may be used for many years.

The Harz is the northernmost German Mittelgebirge and the highest mountain range in Northern Germany.

It was established in its current form by the merging of the Upper Harz National Park and the Harz National Park in Lower Saxony in 2006 following the two National Parks uniting.

Today it is a protected area covering ± 24,700 ha. where numerous varieties of wildlife flourish and rare animals have been reintroduced.

GERMANY ~ Rose Window - Brunswick Cathedral ~

Wonderful "Rose glass stained window" located in the west facade of the cathedral... designed by Heinz Hindorf, one of the premier stained glass artists of the 20thC... it's made of a series of smaller windows radiating out from the center like wheel spokes or flower petals... their symbolism lies in geometry and the sense that many parts make a whole... every element has a degree of meaning... with beautiful "matching" stained glass window Christmas stamp and lovely special postmark!! GERMANY ~ St. Nicholas Church - Leipzig ~

... German beauty nr3... a church related to two important events in history... Johann Sebastian Bach was the musical director of St Nicholas Church and many of his works were premiered here.... what makes it one of Leipzig's Musical Heritage sites... and this church became famous in 1989 with the Monday Demonstrations, a peaceful revolt against Communist rule in East Germany, which was the forerunner to the fall of the Berlin Wall...with great special "Stamp Day" postmark... The St. Nicholas Church is is the largest church in Leipzig. Construction started in Romanesque style in 1165, but in the 16th century, the church was turned into a Gothic hall church. Baroque elements like the tower were added in the 18th century.The interior has been classicist in style since the end of the 18th century.

Stadthagen is the capital of the district of Schaumburg, in Lower Saxony,

The Mausoleum of Prince Ernst is a mausoleum built between 1620-1627. Its unusual architecture and the resurrection monument by Adriaen de Vries make it a site of European rank. The crypt was used as burial place of the House of Schaumburg and the House of Schaumburg-Lippe until 1915.

The central monument by Adriaen de Vries consists of a huge pedestal bearing the cenotaph of Prince Ernst - simultaneously conceived as the tomb of Christ: the cenotaph is surrounded by four drowsing Roman guards, and a larger-than-life figure of Christ triumphant surmounts its top. The dome, painted with fourteen musician angels, represents heaven.

... Lovely surprise nr3 from postcard friend Dustin...  view of one of Germany’s finest railway stations... and it is also an outstanding shopping gallery with lots of restaurants and snack-bars... this is one of 21 German stations that belong to category 1... these stations are big and busy.... they are housed in prestigious buildings and are usually in the center of the city... this year Hanover celebrates the 175th anniversary of its linking to the railway network with a great special train postmark... Thank you very much Dustin for once more a unique philatelic item!! ❀◕ ‿ ◕❀

Hanover Hauptbahnhof (built in 1879)  is the main railway station for the city of Hanover in Lower Saxony. It is also the most important public transport hub of the region of Hanover and it is served regional and S-Bahn services. The station has six platforms with twelve platform tracks and two through tracks without platforms.

The Ernst-August-Platz is a central square located directly in front of the main entrance of the main station. There is a equestrian statue of the Hanoverian King Ernst August I, the Ernst August Monument and in front of the main station is the HAZ fountain.

Fantastic surprise coming from an island home of legends, pirates and treasures... the midst of amazing nature and landscapes... part of a National Park and with wonderful special postmark👍... a tiny person is standing on the cliff... overlooking this powerful landscape must make you feel small... so wish it was me...   Robinson Crusoe Island is the biggest and most important island in the Juan Fernandez Archipelago... there are many things to do, from trekking to nature sightseeing, horseback riding, diving and snorkeling... the special postmark is from Robinson Crusoe island itself with the picture of a lobster, one of the main income of the islanders, they harvest and export them!

"Francés Harbor was named after the French buccaneers who preferred to land here in the 18thC far away from their enemies who anchored usually in Cumberland Bay or further west in English Bay. Its Valley is very eroded due to overgrazing by introduces mammals. Higher up the Valley, native forest is still found especially near the " Rebaja de la Piña" lookout from where a spectacular view can be obtained. To protect this refuge of nature only guided excursions are allowed."  
The Juan Fernández Islands are a sparsely inhabited island group reliant on tourism and fishing in the South Pacific Ocean. Situated 670 km off the coast of Chile, they are composed of three main volcanic islands: Robinson Crusoe, Alejandro Selkirk and Santa Clara. Most of the archipelago's present-day inhabitants reside on Robinson Crusoe Island, mainly in the capital, San Juan Bautista, at Cumberland Bay on the island's north coast. The group of islands are part of Chile's Valparaíso Region (which also includes Easter Island), and along with the Desventuradas Islands, form one of the nine communes of Valparaíso Province named Juan Fernández.

The islands are primarily known for having been the home to the marooned sailor Alexander Selkirk for more than four years from 1704. His experience was the raw material that inspired Daniel Defoe to write world famous Robinson Crusoe, first published in April 1719.

Juan Fernández Archipelago National Park is located in the Pacific Ocean and covers 96 square kilometres and comprises the Santa Clara, Alejandro Selkirk and the most part of the Robinson Crusoe Island islands. It was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1977, and became a National Park in 1935.

... First of two great Belgian postcards... both with newly released stamps and beautiful special first day postmarks...  lovely view of one of the few self-portraits he left us... Rubens painted only four... can be seen in the Rubens House museum...  here is where Rubens, one of the greatest artists ever, once lived with his wife and children and died in 1640...  it is also where he worked, together with his assistants, in his majestic studio and also kept his incomparable art collection...  one of Antwerp’s many and interesting and unique museums... in 2018, Peter Paul Rubens is honored as one of the great inspirators of Baroque painting by Bpost with a miniature sheet with five stamps... This self-portrait in the Rubens House is the most informal of the four. He probably also intended this work to be used in the studio, as a model that his assistants could copy. This self-portrait is traditionally dated around 1630, the year in which Rubens wed Helena Fourment. The painter was 53 years old at the time.

In 1610, Rubens purchased a house with land along Wapper in Antwerp. He drew the plans himself for its extension, which fulfilled the wishes of the artist, businessman, family man and art collector that he was.


After Rubens died, the house underwent a number of changes before rising again as the Rubens House, the home of and museum about the Baroque master painter, Peter Paul Rubens.

BELGIUM ~ 60th Anniversary of The Smurfs ~

... Lovely postcard nr1... both with the first newly released stamps of 2018... with great special stamp postmarkツ... this one shows one more of Belgium's famous cartoons... Bpost had issued new Smurf stamps to celebrate the 60th anniversary of these sweet little blue dwarfs, featuring 5 of the main characters... I loved to read the Smurf comic albums as a kid, I grew up with them.... and I still love them♥... Thanks a lot Johan!! (✿◠‿◠)

The Smurfs  is a Belgian comic series, created by cartoonist Peyo (pen name of Pierre Culliford). The titular creatures were introduced as supporting characters in an already established series, Johan and Peewit in 1958, and starred in their own series from 1959.

These creatures, which later became the Smurfs, were such a hit that they got their own comic series.

Thirty-one Smurf comic albums have been created, 16 of them by Peyo.

A few Belgian beers are Stella Artois, Hoegaarden and Leffe and the Trappist beers (Chimay, Rochefort, Westmalle, etc.) Beer is also used widely by cooking and producing products like beer-washed cheese.

UNESCO has listed Belgium's beer culture among the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016.
