... A beautiful work of art... the most famous landmark in Stadthagen... Italian renaissance style at its best in the middle of northern Germany... amazing quality and wealth of details of the very life-like figures... this bronzes of Adriaen de Vries is the only one of his extensive creations still standing at the original location, while all the other sculptures found new locations or often new owners worldwide... an absolute "must" for art lovers... with great stamp and as always a fantastic postmark celebrating the 100th birthday of Nelson Mandela (a joint issue with South Africa)... Big Thanks Dustin!!【ツ】http://postcardsblogatdustin.blogspot.com/
Stadthagen is the capital of the district of Schaumburg, in Lower Saxony,
The Mausoleum of Prince Ernst is a mausoleum built between 1620-1627. Its unusual architecture and the resurrection monument by Adriaen de Vries make it a site of European rank. The crypt was used as burial place of the House of Schaumburg and the House of Schaumburg-Lippe until 1915.
The central monument by Adriaen de Vries consists of a huge pedestal bearing the cenotaph of Prince Ernst - simultaneously conceived as the tomb of Christ: the cenotaph is surrounded by four drowsing Roman guards, and a larger-than-life figure of Christ triumphant surmounts its top. The dome, painted with fourteen musician angels, represents heaven.
