Mardin is a city in southeastern Turkey known for its Arab-style architecture, and for its strategic location on a rocky mountain near the Tigris River overlooking the plains of northern Syria. This is one of Mesopotamia's oldest settled areas, with evidence of human habitation dating back to 4,000 BCE.

The whole city has been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site under the "Mardin Cultural Landscape".

Side whose name means "pomegranate" in ancient Anatolya, is an ancient Greek town on the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey that has been inhabited off and on since the 7th century B.C.

Main attractions in Side are: The Aspendos theatre,Temples of Apollo and Athena, Manavgat waterfall, Some other attractions include the Byzantine hospital (6th century B.C.), Nymphaeum (fountain in the city wall), the Roman bath converted into a museum.

13th Istanbul Biennial celebrated

This site, which was the capital of Lycia, illustrates the blending of Lycian traditions and Hellenic influence, especially in its funerary art. The epigraphic inscriptions are crucial for our understanding of the history of the Lycian people and their Indo-European language.
It was made famous to the Western world in the 19th century by its British discoverer Charles Fellows. It is very old - finds date back to the 8th century BC, but it is possible that the site may have existed during the Bronze Age or during the first centuries of the Iron Age.

The site has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.

Bursa lies in the northwestern part of Turkey near the Sea of Marmara. It is the fourth largest city in Turkey and is famous for its peach, chestnut, and silk, although lately, heavy industry located in the outskirts of the city has surpassed these traditional industries.

Bursa was the second capital of the Ottoman State between 1335 and 1413. The city was referred to as "Hüdavendigar" (meaning "God's Gift") during the Ottoman period, while a more recent nickname is "Yeşil Bursa" (meaning "Green Bursa") in reference to the parks and gardens, as well as to the vast and richly varied forests of the surrounding region.

Yesil Mausoleum, Bursa is a tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage.The Yesil Cami i is considered one of the best examples of early Ottoman architecture. Its interior as well as it exterior is covered with elaborate marble and tilework. The Yesil Cami served as a royal mosque that housed a madressa, bathhouse, soup kitchen and the tomb of Mehmed I.

Ephesus was once the trade centre of the ancient world, a religious centre of the early Christianity. It played a great role in the ancient times with its strategic location. Ephesus is located on a very fertile valley.

The Celcus Library is the most beautiful structure among the ruins in Ephesus. It was the third largest after Alexandria and Pergamon. Built by Galius Julius Aquila for his father, Celcus Polemaeanus, the grave of Celcus was beneath the ground floor, near the entrance with a statue of Athena over it.

 Celcus Library was believed to have kept 12,000 scrolls at its peak. The external facade has 2-stories with Corinthian columns, 3 entrances and statues of Sophia (wisdom), Episteme (knowledge), Ennoia (intelligence) and Arete (valor).

Troy or “Truva” is one of the most famous and historically significant sites. (with the oldest section dating back to the late fourth millennium BC.) It marks the meeting place of Anatolia, the Aegean and the Balkans, making it a vitally important source of information about the historic relationships between these regions. Each part of the site is numbered, correlating to a specific period of time.

The famous walls of Troy, which played such an important role on the Trojan War, some of which remain, can be seen in the VII section. It is said that Alexander the Great visited Troy in 334BC, at the start of his campaign against the Persians. The Macedonian leader is believed to have paid his respects at the Tomb of Achilles.

 The archaeological site of Troy was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1998.

Nemrut Dağı, or Mount Nemrut, is a 2134 meter tall mountain in eastern Turkey.Lost to memory for 2000 years, the mountaintop south of Malatya and north of Adıyaman and Kahta, was rediscovered by a geologist in 1881.

It  is one of Turkey's most astounding sights: an artifical mountaintop framed by two great temples littered with colossal statues. On it are two hierothesiums, open-air shrines to the gods, with huge limestone statues of Apollo, Fortuna, Zeus, Heracles, and Antiochus I Epiphanes, King of Commagene.

It became a WHS UNESCO site in 1987.

Received an official from Netherland (NL-504902) with a view of Turkey... Although I like the view...I still don't underdstand why people sent cards not showing their own country... For me postcrossing is just about showing some lovely and interesting places from where I am... :(


The Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul, Turkey, located on the European side of the Bosporus, served as the main administrative center of the Ottoman Empire from 1856 to 1922, apart from a twenty-year interval (1889-1909) in which the Yıldız Palace was used.

Most of the people I know are only going to Turkey for its sun.. beaches... but there is so much more to see. If ever I could visit all those historic places from the cards...

Turkey is one of those places where there seems to be almost too much history. This is where the Trojan War and the Battle of Gallipoli took place, where the Byzantine Empire rose and fell, where the apostle Paul was born, where Hittites, Bythinians, Thracian's, Greeks, Romans, Turkomans, and Ottomans built cities and empires. It was once called Asia Minor, and it has long been a crossroads for the world.

The ancient city Aphrodisias was dedicated to the goddess of love Aphrodite. In the 13th C it was abandoned, the city was buried by a series of earthquakes. As the capital of Caria Aphrodisias was finally called Caria which then became Geyre in Turkish.

In a spectacular landscape, entirely sculpted by erosion, the Göreme valley and its surroundings contain rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of Byzantine art in the post-Iconoclastic period. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns – the remains of a traditional human habitat dating back to the 4th century – can also be seen there.

Troy, with its 4,000 years of history, is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. The first excavations at the site were undertaken by the famous archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann in 1870. In scientific terms, its extensive remains are the most significant demonstration of the first contact between the civilizations of Anatolia and the Mediterranean world. Moreover, the siege of Troy by Spartan and Achaean warriors from Greece in the 13th or 12th century B.C., immortalized by Homer in the Iliad, has inspired great creative artists throughout the world ever since.

Deriving from springs in a cliff almost 200 m high overlooking the plain, calcite-laden waters have created at Pamukkale (Cotton Palace) an unreal landscape, made up of mineral forests, petrified waterfalls and a series of terraced basins. At the end of the 2nd century B.C. the dynasty of the Attalids, the kings of Pergamon, established the thermal spa of Hierapolis. The ruins of the baths, temples and other Greek monuments can be seen at the site.

Turkey had a tradition to illustrate manuscripts. The oldest miniatures found in Moslem's circles are from the 9th, 10th, and 11th centuries. Turkish miniature paintings are full of life and action, an art in which romance had little part in.
