South Korea ~Seongsan Sunrise Peak - Jeju Island - UNESCO~

... Lovely scenic view... the ocean, tropical weather, volcanic mountains, pretty flowers and even horses that are native to the island (brought in hundreds of years ago) makes this island a touristic hotspot... especially during Spring when the Seongsan Sunrise Peak is surrounded by rapeseed flowers in a sea of yellow... a symbolic flower of Jeju... the Sunrise Peak is also one of the most popular places in Korea to see the rising sun as it appears above the sea's horizon.... I've seen it too, last weekッ... on a popular Belgian TV travel program... postmarked at the island itself.... Big Thanks David!!❁◕ ‿ ◕❁➞ Postcards a world Travelogue

Jeju Island is the largest island of South Korea. It is also one of the nine provinces of the country and the smallest of all of them. It was formed as a result of a volcanic eruption. Situated to the south in the subtropical belt. That means its flora and climate is quite different from the rest of Korea.

The Seongsan Sunrise Peak, known commonly as Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak, is an enormous “Tuff Cone” that was formed by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. The peak contains 99 sharp rocks that form around the edge of the crater.

In 2007, the whole volcanic island itself, as well as the famous lava tubes within its caves, were added on the World Natural Heritage list.

Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla kingdom. The tombs of the Silla rulers can still be found in the centre of the city. These tombs took the shape of rock chambers buried in an earthen hill, sometimes likened with the pyramids. Excavated tombs reveal wooden coffins covered with gravel and rich grave goods of gold, glass, and quality ceramics. A famous example of a tomb in this park is the Heavenly Horse Tomb which contained a mural painting on birch bark saddle flap of a winged horse.

The historic area around Gyeongju was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage in 2000.

Hwaseong Fortress is actually a circular wall (nearly 6km long) surrounding the old city. It stands on Mount Paldalsan. Around it there are numerous bastions, towers and gates. The construction of the fortress was initiated by King Jeongjo, the 22nd king of the Joseon dynasty in January 1794 and it was completed in September 1796. It was designed to defend the southern approach to the capital, primarily against the old enemy, theJapanese.

Hwaseong Fortress was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1997.
