The National Postal Museum, a Smithsonian Institution museum, is located in the old Post Office building next to Union Station in Washington, D.C. The Museum was created by an agreement between the Smithsonian Institution and the United States Postal Service in 1990 and opened to the public in 1993.


Story about Owney:
A stray mutt wandered into an Albany, New York post office in 1888 and eventually became the unofficial mascot of the Railway Mail Service. He rode with mail mail bags on trains across the country protecting the precious cargo along the way. Railway man clerks attached medals and tags,(when he jogs along, they jingle like the bells on a junk wagon)  to his collar to record the dog's travels and in 1895 Owney traveled with mailbags on steamships to Asia and across Europe.
The story of Owney is told in the exhibition "Mail by Rail" in the museum gallery "Moving the Mail".

The Lincoln Memorial is an American national monument built to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It is located in Potomac Park, Washington, D.C Dedicated in 1922, it is one of several monuments built to honor an American president.
The building is in the form of a Greek Doric temple with 36 enormous columns and contains a large seated sculpture of Abraham Lincoln and inscriptions of two well-known speeches by Lincoln. Over Lincoln's head is the inscription: "IN THIS TEMPLE AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN IS ENSHRINED FOREVER.
The building was built with marble from the state of Colorado.

The memorial has been the site of many famous speeches, including Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered on August 28, 1963 during the rally at the end of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.

USA~Clara Barton National Historic Site~

Great Victorian house with a very interesting story...here lived Clara Barton (of whom I never heard) the Florence Nightingale of the USA...Thanks a lot Ruth!!

Clara Barton National Site in Glen Echo, Maryland was established in 1974 and was the first National Park Service honoring the accomplishments of an American woman.The home reflects Clara Barton's unique blend of professional and personal life.

Clara Barton (December 25, 1821 – April 12, 1912) was a pioneer American teacher, patent clerk, nurse, and humanitarian. At a time when relatively few women worked outside the home, Barton built a career helping others. One of her greatest accomplishments was founding the American Red Cross. This organization helps victims of war and disasters. She was never married, but had a relationship with John J. Elwell.

Although this house has only 11 rooms, it's well worth a visit. The Glen Echo residence showcases the Red Cross founder's dedication to her cause. Built in 1891, the home's design is unusual featuring halls lined with closets filled with blankets, lanterns and other disaster relief supplies. Barton's office is of particular interest. Glen Echo is a fascinating glimpse into this prolific woman's life.

USA ~ OBAMA's second inauguration 2013 ~

This is a such fantastic postcard... Like million other people I watched the ceremony live on TV... I don't know much about politics but it was a very moving event and the Obama family looked really handsome!!
...What makes this postcard even more special is that she was not only sent on the day of the swearing-in but also posted a few blocks from the US capitol...
And for sure Max, it makes me feel closer to this historical moment!! Thanks, Thanks, Thanks Max!!

USA ~Seattle~

My second "surprise" card this week...Amazing skyline, great architecture and beautiful cloudy sky... Especially with the famous "Space Needle" that I recognize from the serie Grey's Anatomy.:D Thanks a lot Irene!!

Seattle is a hilly city, surrounded by water and mountains, so there are many viewpoints to get a great view of the Seattle skyline. Perhaps none are more photographed than the view from Kerry Park on Seattle’s Queen Anne Hill. The park offers a perfect view of downtown Seattle.

Built in 1962, the Space Needle served as the symbol of that year's World's Fair. It has since become the symbol of Seattle, and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and a symbol of Seattle. The privately owned Space Needle is managed by Space Needle LLC.

USA ~Washington, D.C.

Great view of the impressive Capitol building, one of the most symbolically important buildings in the world and a D.C.'s landmark...(USA-1548433). The sender wrote that it is much more impressive in person... but to me it looks already amazing on a postcard...:D:D Thanks Heather!

The United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., is a symbol of the American people and their government, the meeting place of the nation's legislature. The Capitol also houses an important collection of American art, and it is an architectural achievement in its own right. It is a working office building as well as a tourist attraction visited by millions every year.
From the back of the card:
The exquisite landscaping around the Capitol was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, the creator of Central Park in New York. Many of the trees are so rare that they are marked with their names.

USA ~Mount Shuksan~

Great snowy mountain view...The back of the card says:"Winter alpenglow on Mount Shuksan from Picture Lake" (US-1261159) By seeing this postcard I understand why Shuksan is one of the more often photographed mountains in the Cascade Range!! Thanks Arianne!!

The defining features of The North Cascades' are its impressive mountains including Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, and Mount Shuksan; several National Wilderness Areas and National Recreation Areas, Ross and Chelan lakes and the rugged North Cascades National Park.

USA ~San Juan Islands~

Whale watching is one of the popular pastitimes in the San Juans. There are three families (pods) that can be found in the islands each summer, ranging in size from 17 whales in K-pod to more than 50 in L-pod.

USA ~Washington~

"Spyhopping" is the term used to describe the behaviour that Orcas display when they position themselves vertically in the water with their heads bobbing on the surface. Orcas are the largest members of the cetacean family and are easely identified by their bold black and white markings and large dorsal fins.

ÚSA ~San Juan Islands~

The San Juan Islands are a part of the San Juan Archipelago in the northwest corner of the continental United States. The archipelago is split into two groups of islands based on national sovereignty. San Juan Islands are part of the U.S. state of Washington. There are over 450 islands in the entire archipelago at high tide, but fewer than one-sixth are permanently inhabited.
