Ljubljana is the green capital of a green country... the area on either side of the river with its picturesque bridges and the central market owes its distinctive appearance to the great architect Jože Plečnik... the most important Slovenian architect with an international career transformed the image of Slovenia's capital city... architecture and landscape were connected to modernize the city, with respect for the classical elements... the bridges, squares, parks and other public spaces date from between the 1920s and 1940s...the city of thousands events is surrounded by parks and areas of protected nature... a place with a long history of 5000 years but at the same time a young city, thanks to the presence of 22 university faculties... with nice UNESCO postmark... Ljubljana is the capital and the largest city of Slovenia located along the Ljubljanica River in central Slovenia in a natural depression surrounded by high peaks of the Julian Alps.
The history of the city dates back to ancient times, with prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements and the Roman city of Emona, before becoming a significant center under Habsburg rule and the capital of the Illyrian Provinces during the Napoleonic era. It was known for its culture and education, rebuilt in Baroque and Vienna Secession styles after earthquakes in 1511 and 1895, and eventually became the capital of Slovenia upon its independence in 1991.
Ljubljana has been included on the UNESCO’s WHS list in 2021.
