In 1872, Heinrich von Stephan, Germany’s postmaster general back then, was the prime mover in setting up a museum to collect, document and display means of transport from around the world and across the ages.
The imposing Wilhelmine-era museum building was completed in 1898 and has been a museum ever since. Badly damaged in the Second World War and later converted, renovated and reconstructed in an extensive refurbishment programme, the building re-opened in 2000 as the Museum of Communication Berlin.
