... Lovely view of one of the most spectacular birds in the Danube Delta with a wingspan that can be 3 metres and a pristine white plumage, accentuated by a pinkish tinge in the breeding season... easily recognisable by its massive, orange-yellow bill with a large fishing pouch... its social behaviour is very pronounced - it hunts and rests in large groups... the largest colony of great white pelicans in Europe can be found in Roșca-Buhaiova, a protected area in the Danube Delta... watching them is one of the region's main eco-tourism attractions... Thanks a lot Elena! (✿◠‿◠)

The common pelican is a migratory species, arriving in the Danube Delta in early spring from Africa. It nests in dense colonies on floating islands or mudflats, where it builds rudimentary nests from reeds and aquatic vegetation. The bodies of water should have plenty of fish and aquatic plant life. After the breeding season in autumn they migrate back to their wintering grounds in Africa.
The waters of the Danube, which flow into the Black Sea, form the largest and best preserved of Europe's deltas. The Danube delta hosts over 300 species of birds as well as 45 freshwater fish species in its numerous lakes and marshes.
The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
