Established in 1913, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens was the first botanical garden in the world dedicated to South African indigenous flora. Its creation marked a significant step in the conservation of Southern Africa’s unique plant life, driven by the vision of botanist Harold Pearson. The gardens are home to over 7,000 plant species, many of which are endemic to the region.
The name Kirstenbosch was first recorded in 1795 on a property inventory given to the British Occupying forces, though the exact origin of the name remains unclear. It now spans over 528 hectares, with 36 hectares meticulously cultivated.
In 2004 the Cape Floristic Region, including Kirstenbosch, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the first botanic garden in the world to be included within a natural World Heritage Site.
