Located off the northern coast of Mozambique, Mozambique Island served as the capital of Portuguese East Africa for nearly 400 years (1507–1898) before the capital was moved to Maputo. Vasco da Gama landed here in 1498. Sitting
off the mainland in Mossuril Bay, the island is tiny—roughly 3 km long and between 200 and 500 meters wide. It is connected to the mainland by a
bridge constructed in the 1960s.
The Island of Mozambique was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
