The Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt is one of the oldest and largest natural history museums in Germany, showcasing some 40 million objects gathered during 200 years of research.

The Messel Pit Fossil Site is located near the village of Mesel, Darmstadt and is the richest site in the world for understanding the living environment of the Eocene, between 57 million and 36 million years ago.

The Messel Pit  with its fossil finds, was declared Germany's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
