Innsbruck is located Tyrol, a state in western Austria, in the Inn Valley surrounded by the Alps. Innsbruck became the capital of all Tyrol in 1429 and in the 15th century the city became a centre of European politics and culture as Emperor Maximilian I also resided in Innsbruck in the 1490s. The city’s name, “Innsbruck,” translates to “bridge over the Inn River,” referring to the bridge that originally crossed the river in the medieval period.
The Nordkette, also variously called the North Chain, Northern Range, is a range of mountains just north of the city. It is the southernmost of the four great mountain chains in the Karwendel.
