Originally built in 1180, it was damaged by earthquakes in the 16th and 17th centuries, and rebuilt in the early 18th. Heavily damaged during World War II, it was fully restored.
It features a lavish interior with frescoes by Cosmas Damian Asam and stucco work by Egid Quirin Asam. The high altar houses the 'Maria Hilf' painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder, a revered Marian image.
The cathedral also contains the canopied tomb of Archduke Maximilian III of Austria, dating from 1620.
This cathedral not only preserves some of Austria’s most historic bells but also houses the largest and most extensive carillon in the entire country. In fact, since 1982, Innsbruck Cathedral has been home to 48 bells.
