... Great Panama postcard nr 2... this archeological site of Panama Vieja (Old Panama) are the ruins of the original Panama City and former capital of the country and also the first permanent European settlement founded in the Pacific Ocean... it is a quite a large area with bridges, streets and some ruins... the layout and scale of this site remains largely unchanged from the original form, and no architectural renovations have been made... this means you’ll have the rare opportunity to walk through history... a big part of the tower from the cathedral is still preserved... you can climb atop this iconic bell tower and look at the Panama City skyline from the city’s original "skyscraper"... Thanks a lot Amelia!【ツ】
The first European city on the Pacific shore of the Americas, was founded in 1519 as a terminal city of Trans-Isthmian Colonial Route road for the riches from the Americas to Spain.
The city was destroyed and burned down by pirate Henry Morgan in 1671. In the year 1673, Panama City was officially transferred to a new site, which is today's Historic District of Panama City.
When Panama became a Republic in 1903, there was not an official account of Panama's history. To this effect, in 1908, Juan B. Sosa and Enrique J. Arce were commissioned to write a History of Panama in four years, a step towards a definite national history.
Together with the historical district of Panamá (Casco Viejo), it forms a World Heritage Site since 1997.
