GERMANY ~ The Märchenbrunnen - Volkspark Friedrichshain - Berlin ~

... Lovely view of  "Little Red Riding Hood" (known to Germans as simply Rotkäppchen) a sculpture of the Fairytale fountain... this beautiful fountain is surrounded by figures from nine of the fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and is the largest public fountain from the Kaizer era and an attraction in the park... children especially love the various fairy tale characters... in the summer months the fountain is a popular meeting place... the stone sculptures includes also Hansel and Gretel, Puss in Boots, Hans in Luck, Cinderella, Snow White with the 7 Dwarfs, and Sleeping Beauty... the "scary" figures placed in the side aisles, such as Mrs. Holle, the cannibal and the giant's daughter, are missing today... every spring the fountains are activated and run through autumn... with nice stamp and special first day cancellation👍celebrating the 100th anniversary of the German children's books author, Otfried Preußler... Thanks Dustin!ヽ(ヅ)ノ

The Fairytale Fountain is located at the south-western entrance to Friedrichshain public park.

It was commisioned in 1893 to serve as a gate to the park recently created in this area and designed by the city architect Ludwig Hoffmann. Although the works began at the turn of the century, it took untill 1913 to finish the construction works. The fountain system, designed in the neo-baroque style, was finally completed and opened to the public.

The structure was badly damaged during the war and remained in poor condition untill the 1980’s, when the reconstruction started. Due to low funds, as well as ongoing vandalism, the fairytale springs remained largely unused untill 2005, when the city of Berlin commisioned a full restoration of the area to it’s original state.
