It was painted around 1669 and is believed to have been commissioned by a geographer named Adriaan Adriaanszoon.

This is one of only three paintings Vermeer signed and dated (the other two are The Astronomer and The Procuress).

For many years the painting was in private hands and was rediscovered in the 19th century. Since then, it has been the subject of numerous exhibitions and has been considered one of Vermeer's most important works.
