NORWAY ~ Røros Mining Town - Trøndelag - UNESCO ~

.. Beautiful wintery scene of a little mining town located inland, deep within the Norwegian mountains... as such, it's one of the coldest places in Norway with temperatures regularly dipping below -30C in the winter...  this traditional mountain village is one of the oldest towns of wooden buildings in Europe... known for being a living museum that whispers centuries of history, all the way from the charming streets and down to the old copper mines... from Røros Museum, built on the foundations of an old smelting house, you can join a walking tour, seeing the area where poor miners lived in plain huts in the shadow of the slag heap.... Røros gets around one million visitors yearly... Many Thanks Elze!【ツ】

The mining town Røros was founded in 1646 by King Christian IV. Mining was established in the 17thC and exploited for 333 years until 1977. Completely rebuilt after its destruction by Swedish troops in 1679, Roros contains about 2000 wooden one- and two-store houses and a smelting house.

Røros was added to UNESCO's WHS list in 1980; the site includes the town, as well a 45km radius of industrial landscape surrounding it.
