There are over 1,000 glaciers and accounts for 27% of the Park area. Most are high in the mountains, but a few notable glaciers extend all the way to the sea.
Glacier Bay has over 40 different species of mammals and the park has approximately 300 species of plants. Home to a large bear population, both brown and black, as well as the blue glacier bear, Moose, wolves, Sitka blacktail deer, mountain goats, and bald eagle.
In 1986, UNESCO declared an area of 23,000ha within a World Biosphere Reserve. This is the largest UNESCO protected biosphere in the world. In 1992, UNESCO included this area as a part of a World Heritage site, extending over an area of 98,000km2.
