... Great view of one the most significant preserved churches built in the Ottonian Pre-Romanesque style... showing the choir with side apses and transept turrets... an imposing multi-towered structure, which crowns a hill in the west end of the city...
St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Michael's Church at Hildesheim are two inseparable monuments that are an exceptional testimony to the religious art of the Holy Roman Empire... the church has a famous rare and beautiful painted ceiling, with 1300 oak boards stretching 27.8m long by 8.7m wide, its theme is the Tree of Jesse (the family tree of Christ)... it survives thanks to its removal in 1943, before wartime bombing destroyed much of the church... with also lovely stamp nr2 đ"The wolf and the seven young goats" (this year chosen for the new annual welfare stamps about the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm) with *ofcourse*đ a different special postmark❤️... Big Thanks

In 996 the Hildesheim Bishop Bernward, a keen patron of the arts, brought Benedictines from Cologne to Hildesheim and in 1010 began the construction of a church dedicated to St. Michael. The crypt was dedicated in 1015; the church was complete by 1033.
It is assumed that the bishop himself participated in the planning of the church. The edifice experienced severe destruction in the Second World War, and today's structure is the result of the post-war rebuilding.
St Mary's Cathedral and St Michael's Church at Hildersheim are on the UNESCO WHS list since 1985.
