GERMANY~ St. Mary's Cathedral - UNESCO~

...Another lovely surprise from postcard friend Dustin...an outstanding example of religious architecture... a medieval Roman Catholic cathedral in the city centre and one of the oldest in the country... the beautiful city of Hildesheim is also the home of the oldest living rose on the planet known as the rose of Hildesheim or the thousand-year rose... this rose climbs up the walls of this cathedral... with great stamp and special postmark to celebrate 200 years bicycle...(200 years since the father of the bicycle Baron Karl von Drais invented the "running machine"... never knew it was a German invention☺)... Thanks a lot Dustin!! ✿◕ ‿ ◕✿ ➞My postcard and stamp week

The cathedral church was built between 1010 and 1020 in the Romanesque style. It follows a symmetrical plan with two apses, that is characteristic of Ottonian Romanesque architecture in Old Saxony.

After renovations and extensions in the 11th, 12th and 14th centuries, the cathedral was completely destroyed during an air raid on 22 March 1945 and rebuilt from 1950 to 1960. A thorough renovation of the cathedral began in 2010, including technical and conservation measures. The cathedral was reopened on 15 August 2014.

The treasury of Hildesheim Cathedral is a collection of liturgical vessels, reliquaries, vestments and sculptural works, built up over the centuries and of exceptional rarity and international importance.

In 1985, the Hildesheim Cathedral and its treasures, together with the nearby St. Michael's Church, were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites.
