Shenandoah National Park is located in North Virginia and was established in 1935. The park has four entrances and covers a total area of 308 km², the lowest point is 161m at an unnamed stream and the highest point in Shenandoah is 1352m at Hawksbill Peak.
The park is comprised primarily of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which are part of the Appalachian Mountain Range, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world formed over 300 to 500 million years ago.
"Shenandoah" is derived from native American languages, most likely the Algonquin “schind-han-do-wi.” Many translations have been proposed, but the most enticing is "Beautiful Daughter of the Stars."
