... Great view of the famous Pont d’Avignon a medieval landmark spanning the Rhône with the historic city centre and the Palace of the Popes in the background... originally the bridge once had 22 arches... repeated flooding of the Rhône destroyed sections of it, and rebuilding was eventually abandoned, leaving just four arches standing... the Saint Bénezet bridge, a major witness of the history of Avignon, is known throughout the world thanks to the famous song ♬♫♩♪ "
Sur le pont d’Avignon" ♪♩♫♬... a French song about a dance performed under the bridge and not on the bridge... Thanks a lot Nadia!【ツ】
According to legend, the bridge was built in the 12th century by a young shepherd from the Vivarais region named Bénézet, following a divine command.
In reality, the bridge’s construction was an ongoing project that spanned several centuries. Originally the bridge was 920 meters long but hydrological changes in the river, resulting from climate shifts beginning in the 15th century, led to its destruction and it fell into disuse in the 17th century.
Designated as part of the Historic Centre of Avignon: Papal Palace, Episcopal Ensemble and Avignon Bridge World Heritage site in 1995.
