HAITI ~ Citadelle Henry - Milot - UNESCO ~

... Yippie!👍 My first ever postcard w/s from Haiti🧡... only a few more countries to go... a misty cloud-covered view due to its high altitude and tropical mountain climate... on heavily misty days, the towering 40-meter stone walls dramatically emerge from the fog...  earning it the nickname "Haiti's Fortress in the Clouds"...from the upper stone terraces, you can look down into the misty inner courtyards, over massive fields of original bronze cannons, and across stacked piles of un-fired cannonballs...  this citadelle is one of the very few African-derived military fortifications in the New World...  as well as the first major example of African-derived colonial architecture... it stands as a symbol of freedom and was built after Haiti won its independence from France... a global symbol of Black sovereignty and the success of the Haitian Revolution... a landmark of the country... Thanks a lot Lily! (ˆ⌣ˆԅ)

The Citadelle Henry (widely known as Citadelle Laferrière) is a is a large early 19th-century mountaintop fortress located in Milot,  sitting 900 meters above sea level atop Bonnet à l’Évêque mountain.

Built by tens of thousands of former slaves, the Citadelle was commissioned by Haitian revolutionary Henri Christophe in 1804 and completed in 1820 for whom it is also named Citadelle Henri.

It is the largest fortress in the Western Hemisphere, stretching across 10,000 square meters and dominates the highest point on Haiti's north Coast.

It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
