SURINAME ~ Paramaribo - UNESCO ~

... Lovely views of the unique historic inner city featuring hundreds of 17th- and 19th-century colonial wooden houses... the majority of the buildings in the historic city centre were built in a typical Surinamese architectural style with many Dutch influences... the architecture incorporates Dutch steep roofs alongside large verandas and jalousie shutters to manage the tropical heat... the most important building material was primarily native tropical hardwoods, which was abundantly available...  due to the predominantly wooden buildings from the colonial period, the city centre is known as "The Wooden City"... a large number of the still existing wooden buildings have a monument status... Paramaribo is the capital and largest city of Suriname, located on banks of the Suriname River in the Paramaribo District. The area, a trading post started by the Dutch, was taken by the English in 1630, and in 1650 the city became the capital of the new English colony. The area changed hands often between the English and Dutch but it was in Dutch hands again in 1667 and under Dutch rule from 1815 until the independence of Suriname in 1975.

The Historic Inner City of Paramaribo became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
