The Grand Canyon was carved by the steady erosion of the Colorado River over some 6 million years and spans 446 km in length, reaches up to 29 km in width, and plunges over 1.8 km deep. This entire National Park covers a massive 4,931 square kilometers.
It became a National Park in 1919 and UNESCO site in 1979.
