RWANDA ~ Lake Kivu ~

Rwanda’s largest lake perched at 1,460m above sea level... surrounded by magnificent mountains and deep emerald green waters, eucalyptus trees and even fading old mansions from colonial times... this remarkably deep freshwater lake is as rich in biodiversity and culture as it is in scenic wonder... it produces over 20,000 tons of fish annually, supporting the livelihoods of more than half a million people in the region... water sports, including swimming, (as it's free from hippos and crocodiles) are popular activities on the lake... Lake Kivu lies on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. the lake empties into the Ruzizi River, which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika. It covers  2,700 km2  (90 km long, 50 km wide) with an average depth of 240 meters and a maximum depth of 480 meters. Lake Kivu is also one of the world's three exploding lakes, known for its CO2 gas and limnic eruptions.
