The city of Ávila is located in the centre of Spain, in the Autonomous Community of Castile and León.
The defensive wall of Avila was built to protect the Spanish territories from the Moors between the 11th and 14th centuries, has an average height of 12 meters and a thickness of three meters. There are 87 turrets, 9 gates and 2 small gates and 2,500 merlons. (a solid, vertical part of the wall of a fort or a battlement)
The Old Town of Ávila with its Extra-Muros Churches was designated a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 1985. It is a serial property, which includes the walled town of Ávila and four extra-muros Romanesque churches: San Segundo, San Andrés, San Vicente, and San Pedro.
