The telecommunications tower on Steinberg hill was built in 1971. Initially, the tower served as a relay station for radio communications to Berlin and for mobile phone service.
In 1987, it was extended to a height of 154.65 meters with the addition of a fiberglass-reinforced plastic tube (containing antennas for analog radio and television transmission).
At the end of April 2004, this 30-meter-long tube was replaced with a new one containing antennas for digital radio and television transmission.
