The Imperial Palace of Goslar, known as the Kaiserpfalz, was substantially founded and constructed under Holy Roman Emperor Henry III with major building activity occurring between 1040 and 1050. This development built upon an initial imperial mansion established around 1005 by Henry II. In the St. Ulrich Chapel at the south end a stone sarcophagus with the figure of Heinrich III on the cover houses the gold capsule containing the heart of the emperor, who died in 1056. The Imperial Palace of Goslar covers an area of about 340 long and 180 metres wide.
Since 1992, the palace site, together with the Goslar's Old Town and the Rammelsberg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
