... Beautiful aerial night view of a stunning landmark... this majestic cathedral with its twin towers dominates the city’s skyline... the spiritual heart of the city... it is widely considered to be the best example of Gothic architecture in Bavaria... the stunning stained glass windows from the 13th and 14th centuries are one of Regensburg Cathedral's main features.. these windows constitute the largest collection of still-preserved medieval stained glass in the German-speaking world and are assembled from thousands of colorful glass pieces fitted together like a mosaic... the cathedral also houses a remarkable collection of art, including sculptures, altars, and a magnificent organ, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Regensburg... The history of St. Peter’s Cathedral dates back to the 13th century, replacing earlier churches that occupied this site. The cathedral was to be built as high as the sky. This vision came to a temporary end when funds ran out around 1520 and the cathedral, especially its towers, could not be finished. For more than 350 years, the cathedral stood in the center of the old town with tower stumps that were only about half as high as today's towers. In 1859, by order of King Ludwig I, work began on the extension of the towers. The towers were inaugurated in 1869.
