The foundations of Weltenburg Abbey the oldest monastery in Bavaria, date back to the early 7th century, with its first documented founding in 617 by Irish or Scottish monks. The Benedictine order later took over the site in the 8th century, and the brewery began operation in 1050 in 1191 the first church on the site was consecrated.  From 1716–1739, the current Baroque buildings, including the Abbey Church, were constructed by the Asam Brothers.
