Skagen is a town located in Jutland, a region of Denmark. Its name originally spelled, "Skaffuen", meaning, "high point of land".
The town originated as a fishing settlement in the early Middle Ages, where fishing was the foundation of its existence, although agriculture was also practiced in the surrounding area of Højen, now Old Skagen. Skagen has one of Denmark’s largest fishing harbours and this is still the most important industry.
