GERMANY ~ Ground Squirrel ~

... A funny looking ground squirrel posing in an old shoe... it is known for the shrill whistle it emits... by sitting up on its short hind legs in a "begging" position the souslik is able to keep a careful eye on its surroundings... sadly, due to drastic changes in land use and agricultural practices, the ground squirrel has since lost much of its natural habitat and is now classified as endangered...  with lovely matching stamp "young animals" and as always with nice postmark👍... Big Thanks Dustin!✿◕ ‿ ◕✿

The European squirrel is a rodent found in eastern and central Europe and is a colonial animal. They live in underground burrows and hide when they feel threatened like, for example, in the proximity of a predator. Therefore, they use these underground burrows also as a save place for their young.

The European ground squirrel has a slender build and grows to a length of approximately 20cm with a 6cm-long furry tail. It feeds on grasses, other plants, flowers, seeds, cultivated crops, insects and occasionally the eggs of ground nesting birds or their chicks.
