St. Mary’s Church, known locally as St. Marienkirche is a large Lutheran church built sometime before 1298.
Over the years, various parts have been rebuilt after sustaining damage. For instance, the bell tower collapsed in the 1380s and the original steeple tower fell over in 1495. The Baroque dome was replaced by a steeple tower and dates back to 1708.
Recognized as part of the historic center of Stralsund, the church was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2002.
