Ararat was a part of Armenia until 1915 when Turkey took over that part of Armenia. Yerevan is located in the north-eastern part of the Ararat Valley. It was founded in 782 BC by King Argishti I. 

Armenia is a part of the Caucasus region and is bordered by Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaija, Iran and the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan. Being a former Soviet Republic it gained its independence in 1991.
