GERMANY ~ LWL Museum of Art and Culture - Munster ~

... Nice postcard published for the exhibition "Barbarossa. The Art of Dominance"... on the occasion of the 900th birthday of Emperor Friedrich I. Barbarossa (1122 - 1190), the LWL Museum had showed a special exhibition... as King and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, the dazzling figure of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa played a leading role in the political fabric of Europe... the exhibition portrayd the versatile and sometimes contradictory character of the Emperor...with cute kitten🐈 stamp and first day postmark... Thanks Dustin!【ツ】

From backside postcard:
"The Cappenberger head (around 1150/60) does not show Emperor Barbarossa, but John the Evangelist."

In 1886 Friedrich Philippi put forward the hypothesis that it was a more or less realistic portrait bust of Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa . Only later was the figure converted into a reliquary of St. John. This assumption generally prevailed in the period that followed, but has now been refuted by scientific research results from 1978 and 2021.

The LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur in Münster is one of the largest art and cultural history museums in North Rhine-Westphalia. The museum was founded over 100 years ago as a symbol of civic commitment and now boasts a collection of roughly 450,000 objects.
