GERMANY ~ Henry the Lion tomb - Brunswick ~

...  View of the sculptures on the tomb of Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, and his second wife Matilda of England in Brunswick Cathedral... of which he was the founder... this Gothic tombstone depicts the Duke as a young soldier with the model of the cathedral in his hand... the “Lion's portal” is in the northern part of the cathedral beneath the alter.. with great special postmark👍 to commemorate the dead of the first German Pope, Benedict XVI... Thanks Dustin! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Henry the Lion 1129/1131 – 1195 was a member of the Welf dynasty who ruled as the duke of Saxony and Bavaria from 1142 and 1156, respectively, until 1180.

Henry was one of the most powerful German princes of his time. At the height of his reign he ruled over a vast territory stretching from the coast of the North and Baltic Seas to the Alps, and from Westphalia to Pomerania. Henry achieved this great power in part by his political and military acumen and in part through the legacies of his four grandparents.

In 1168, Henry married Matilda (1156–1189), the daughter of King Henry II of England and Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine and sister of King Richard I of England.
