LAOS ~ Buddhist monks - Luang Prabang ~

... Nice view of  a Buddhist tradition and ancient ritual... Laypeople offering food to the monks often kneeling before them and placing offerings into their bowls... in exchange for spiritual support... the monks remain silent and give no thanks... traditionally, monks had only two possessions, their robes and their begging bowl... these contributions are not charity... this simple lifestyle was supposed to encourage monks to think about what was truly necessary for living a wholesome existence... they create an important connection between the monasteries and the communities that they serve... this practice has been passed down in Laos for thousands of years... Big Thanks Gian Luca and Raffaella for thinking of me while traveling! (✿ ♥‿♥)

Buddhism is the primary religion of Laos. Lao Buddhism is a unique version of Theravada Buddhism and is at the basis of ethnic Lao culture. Buddhism in Laos is often closely tied to animist beliefs and belief in ancestral spirits, particularly in rural areas. Buddhism counts for over 65% of the population. There are also some Chinese or Vietnamese Mahayana Buddhists, primarily in urban centers.
